Okay, I'm almost ashamed to admit that I once considered this fit for publication...

The first Prismatic Vodka strip, drawn approximately late August, 2005.
Now, I caused a bit of a fluff in another thread by complaining about webcomics that start off crap and improve without the artist redrawing the early stuff. Loads of people replied saying 'I wouldn't have the time to redraw', but from what I've seen in this thread, none of those people actually fall into the category of 'starting off crap'. Prismatic Vodka does, hence this summer I redrew some of it. Here's what replaced that original strip (probably drawn within days of being a year later):

As they say, at least the new stuff's presentable... ^_--

The problem with you saying that is that it's all subjective and it depends on the ARTIST's viewpoint as to whether or not something gets redrawn. Yes, even artists whom you consider to be good want to redo their early pages. If an artist sees their starting stuff as no good, no matter whether you or other readers think it does not "start off crap", then they'll go ahead and redraw it if they are so inclined. They might be more inclined to do so if they hear people saying "if your beginning stuff is bad, redo it for your readers' sakes".Tinkerbell wrote: Now, I caused a bit of a fluff in another thread by complaining about webcomics that start off crap and improve without the artist redrawing the early stuff. An artist has a vastly different view of their own art than a reader will ever have, and in the end, an artist is going to go with their own feelings and nobody else's. You are advocating that if someone's first stuff is bad--or more underdeveloped than their current stuff--they are under an obligation to redraw it because of the large quality gap between the old and new. You don't give any criteria, you don't say WHO determines whether it should be redrawn or not, you just say "if it starts off bad, do it over".

That favourite subject, myself
Oh man, I love obsessively tracing the evolution of a style. Here is mine, starting with 1999:
<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/ ... lution.gif" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>
I have comics from before this (1992 I think is when they start), but I don't have them at my house right now, and, um, this is quite enough. I also don't have anything from 2001, weirdly, though I don't think I was doing much drawing at the time.
Creds: 1999 is from my first webcomic, Radio KAOS, or "the origin of naive crosshatching." 2000 is from my second, Wild Blue, or "let's try to write a comic that isn't funny in any way." The thing about the junkyard from 2002 was a flyer I put up around town featuring a comic strip in some kind of artistic statement or something. The cowboy is from a collaboration with a friend (Aaron Reiser of the dearly departed THWACK) called "The Samurai and the Texan", drawn in an hour or two, and featuring really inept efforts at changing line weight. The one with the elf at the gravestone is from a series of moody comics done on my livejournal--I was in a bad way at the time, you see. The one with the, um, singing harlequin is from my third webcomic, Old Bayou Man. The one with people smoking pot is from Free Comic Book Day 2004, and was drawn in kind of a hurry. The one with the punk kid is from an abortive webcomic idea, "Punk Rock Adventure Kids". The rest are from various phases of my fourth and only decent webcomic, The Man Who Hates Fun, and represent the "torturously detailed", "crowquill", "flamboyant" and "current" stages of the art, respectively.
What is next? Ziptone collages, Jackson Pollock-style splatter effects, manga linework. I don't know--it was just fun to make this big old thing.

My bad, that was not the impression I intended to give at all. Apologies.Mercury Hat wrote: An artist has a vastly different view of their own art than a reader will ever have, and in the end, an artist is going to go with their own feelings and nobody else's. It's kind of nice to look back and realize that there has actually been some improvement, over the life of your comic.

The truth is out there. I think it's following me.
You know, the paranoid poeple are gonna be the first ones to notice the invasion of the the space communists. Think about that.
The only things worth taking seriously are the ones that aren't important enough to joke about.

I like it when women yell at me. Angry ladies are sexay ladies.

Yup. We all learn to draw from somewhere, right?

But then I'll get my head bitten off again! I always wind up offending everyone when I get into raging debates. I don't think fast enough on my feet (or, since we're typing, my fingers :p ).JTigerclaw wrote:Awww, you're no fun. I was hoping for a raging debate.
'Sides, I do agree that most artists (myself included, apparently, though you'd have a hard time convincing me my art's worth anything) could use a better sense of perspective (pun honestly not intended) about the quality of their art.
No sense having a raging debate over something you agree on...
