Although pretty much all of the email I've gotten has been fairly positive, I have gotten a forum troll. Originally he spammed the NCRPG board to get his user rank really high (often replying to his own posts dozens of times) then he tried to join the RP...we blocked him, but he just went to the next board and spammed there too. Finally, we all had enough and everything he posted was followed with pages of what a dick he was. Eventually, he was given his own special forum title 'Village Idiot' and we started messing with his forum sig and avatar. Point is, he never went away but we finally beat the 'troll-ness' out of him. His posts now are incohereant, but at least they're not rude.

So I suppose my advice is to get a bunch of people and eGang up on him. Ignoring doesn't work cause they know eventually they will bother you.

Or, if you know someone adept with code, you could send him thousands of SPAM emails a day telling him how much he sucks.

I would say go ahead and post your email. Personally, all the email I've gotten has been, at worst, interesting, and at best a real pick-me-up. Might just be me, though - I love letters from fans. Better than drugs. ;)

I'd say go for the Maddox approach. Ie, post his mails and address on your site.

Ignoring it would probably be the best approach, but nowhere near as fun.

Ignoring it really would be the best approach. A lot of forums have a rule "Don't Feed the Trolls" and it's a good rule to keep in mind when dealing with them out in the wild.

I haven't really gotten anything quite like that, hell I don't get letters of any kind in regards to my comic. However, I tend to be modest, to the point of putting my comic down when I talk to other people, mainly cause a. I can always improve, and b. I don't want to sound conceited. But anyway.
He'd seen my work, and I'd seen his, and of course I said it was very nice, and that such. But apparently me complimenting his work, whilest not saying anything complimentary of my own apparently equled in his head: I should teach her how to draw! to which I politely declined. Let's just say, his drawing style was erm.... not quite equal to the earliest stuff I have back from fifth grade.
I dunno, some people really have ego issues and think everything they touch is golden.
So you're not alone my friend, you are not alone, and sadly, neither is the person who writes to you. Ugh!

I've gotten one hate mail. Basically, the guy told me he hated the ad I had on something possitive. He told me is was the dumbest and most cliche way to adverise a comic. Then he proceded to tell me the shitty ad was an acturate representation of my appartently very shitty comic. Then he told me my art was nice but sometimes I don't put in backround which is "the type of bullshit a peice of crap like SOmethign Positive pulls."

Email made me wonder.

Why is the ad bad if it acturately displays the comic?

Why even click the ad and read the comic if the ad is so shitty?

and why was he even on the Somethign Positive site to see the ad to begin with since he thinks that webcomic is a peice of crap?

All in all it mad me laugh.
Could be worse; could be raining.

I have an email address on my site. I've never gotten any nasty emails. I have gotten good ones. But mostly nothing at all. Tagboards negate the need for emails, most of the time.

It's not very common, actually, not in E-mails.
What you do have to worry about is people bashing your comic on various forums and sites, which you eventually find through checking your reffers or googling your comic's name... Those are inevitable and a guy has to get a thick skin to be prepared for them.

Yeah, tagboards don't require a place you can be reached, a website of your own stuff, or any forum registration, so they're easy places for trolls to hit.

I haven't had any hate mail, but I have had the "You're good at art so you owe me something" type people. I had a guy recently who approached me for a commission. He said he liked my deviantart gallery and comic (which is, in general, full of cuteness and girly things and more cuteness) and then asked me to draw him a "muscular creepy jester that looks totally pimp." I kinda just laughed and then he said

"Oh, and I also need a full deck of cards"
Me: "A full deck? Sorry, I don't have time for that"
Him: "Well, maybe just the face cards?"
Me: "Honestly, I don't have time for that either" (I've been wanting to do this for myself for forever and never been able to pull off more than a queen sketch.)
Him: "Oh, well I thought you just sat on the computer all day and drew"

At that point I almost put him on ignore. I just found it insulting.

And he kept using "pimp" as an adjective. Like "can you draw me a guy that's all pimp?" Sorry, but I'm not really sure what that adjective MEANS now adays. And for some reason I feel he'd actually be pleased if I drew in giant fur coats and whores everwhere.

*sigh* End rant!

Hmm, the rare comments I have ever received was "It's impossible for someone like Pete to have survived this long."

And CBF, just ignore the lad, he's not worth the time or effort.

I have never gotten a single piece of e-mail remotely related to my comic. All I get is spam e-mail. Which is rather depressing

I changed over to a different e-mail host today, though, because I realized that g-mail isn't as widely recognized or accepted by all e-mail providers. Maybe I'll get something besides penis enlargement mail now. :shifty:

Good luck with your psychotic "fan"

Ohkay, whell, tecnically, you could ignore it, but seeing if you do, he would continue to send you his annoying crapp about him being good at drawing, and you can laugh at it.

But thats really no fun. If you want to get rid of him [or just annoy him further, i have no idea which one would happen] then just show him this fourm of people ranting bout how stupid he is, and people like him.

But thats still the boring approch, seeing as you could always let me attack him, and kick him in the balls [seeing as i've never seen someone get kicked in the balls] with steel toed shoes [my friend has them, i actually kicked them. They hurt.] :D

Either way its fine, after all its your choice. Personally, i'd chose the kicking in balls one. Just for the sake of it. Seeing as hes stupid and all and deserves a swift kick.

XD

Another vote for ignoring him. I've never gotten a letter like that about my comic, but I also work on a semi-popular freeware game and you should see the interesting letters I get about that. The most memorable one I remember off the top of my head requested that I remove the giant robots, make the game world more "realistic", and add prostitutes that your character would be able to have sex with. The letter-writer even offered to make these changes for me and provide his own artwork just as soon as I taught him how to program. :eyebrow:

As for webcomic trolls... I wish I had a webcomic troll. It'd be acknowledgement of my existence, at least. I don't even have a freaking tagboard spammer... I feel so lonely...
