Villain Creation Contest!

Post by Linkara »

So, I was thinking about my Rogue's gallery for Lightbringer - The Smiling Man, the Gentleman, White Death, Darkbringer... well, I noticed a continuing trend - they tend to be murderers, usually promoting some philosophical thing, and their coloring scheme tends to fall on the blah side of things, mostly black/white/grey with the hint of another color here and there. As such, I'd like some new badguys.

I tried giving it a go myself, but I couldn't really think of anything that didn't seem too derivative or just not convincing enough as a bad guy. As such, I'm starting another contest, a Create-A-Villain Contest!

Think up as much backstory as you'd like, as much information as you want to give me, and I'll pick one (or a few, if I feel they're good enough) to be used later on, maybe as a cameo or even the focus of an entire issue! ^_~ Giving me pictures is definitely a plus, but I'd prefer at least a detailed costume description. Anything else you want to give is up to you! The winner will be linked any time the character shows up again (as well as a permanent link in the "Cast" section of Lightbringer).

So, go nuts! Bring on the bad guys!

Oh, definitely! They can be real or manufactured ala technology, if you wish, but superpowers always makes 'em a more dangerous foe for Lightbringer. ^_^

"Light man" as you call him is attempting to clean up Pharos City, which has decayed over the last few years to become so controlled by criminals that police either are unable to stop them or unwilling. Crime can occur in broad daylight or the dead of night...

...albeit that's changed with the end of the last storyline, as the most powerful gang in the city has now been taken down. ^_~

Here, try this on for size. This is a villain of my own design from a superhero's game long ago. This particular villain could resurface repeatedly.

Name: No actual name.
Species: Interstellar omnivorous plantlife
Goal: Growth. Eventual budding. Then death.

History:
This plant is indirectly responsible for the seeding of life in the universe. Its spores land on a world. It's tendrils dig deep into the planet and lay across it's surface, feeding on organics and minerals it finds. Eventually it buds. After flinging its spores out into space, the plant dies. Its surface tendrils become rich nutrient sources and it's deeper tendrils decompose leaving veins of purified ore.

Description: Imagine a fungal mat with deep taproots - think of a mesh of tendrils with no obvious core source. It is a fairly uniform dull orange color, and it's tendrils can move on their own - in indirect proportion to their thickness. Large tendrils move slowly and sluggishly. Thin tendrils have high dexterity and are quick. Strength of course, is in direct proportion to it's size. A thin tendril is fairly weak. A thick tendril, very strong.

Of important note is that there is no central core to this plant. No heart, no brain, no central mass that can be destroyed. It is, fortunately, unable to reproduce by cutting - if a piece is sliced off, only the largest piece remains viable. Thus, cutting off a tendril kills the tendril, it does not make another creature.

Goal: The goal of the plant is simple. It consumes to grow. Whe it has grown large enough, it buds. Unfortunately, 'large enough' includes taproots to the liquid outer core of the planet and a mat of tendrils covering most of the planet.

Intelligence: Rudimentary, and singularly directed towards growth and things that will promote growth. It is clever, but it has no concept of life outside itself. Just nutrient sources, some of which are bothersomely difficult to eat.

Eating: The plant eats by absorbtion. It excretes a very sticky mucous over it's tendrils that contains powerful oxidizers, enzymes, and acids. Anything those chemicals can dissolve, gets absorbed by the tendril. This happens very quickly, and is a very painful process. Anything it cannot digest, it tends to ignore.

Growth: The plants spore is about a meter in volume. About 25% of whatever it digests is turned into biomass. the remaining 75% is either used as energy or radiated as heat. Early on, it will grow dramatically in size - doubling it's volume daily for a couple weeks. At this point it is about eight kilometers of volume - but realize that is spread out, mostly underground, mostly put into developing tap roots. It then slows it's growth, doubling in volume every ten years or so until it reaches it's final size in about 250 years - several hundred million cubic kilometers (Again, much of this underground, but at that point, covering large swaths of the surface too).

This means the hero could encounter it shortly after it's arrival. And for the lifetime of the strip, the plant will never grow so big as to be impossible to ever manage, but looking into the future would show it one day covering the entire world.

OK, specific powers and weaknesses:

Power - Immunity to broadly applied pressures and temperatures of any extreme. Broadly applied means this - the more volume the extreme is applied to, the lesser the effect. Think of a bean bag - it can hold your entire volume if you lay on it, but if you step on it your foot goes most of the way to the floor. A tendril could slither through lava, but be burned by a blowtorch. It could withstand a building falling on it, but a knife edge could cut it.

Power - Ability to consume almost anything. Think up your own limits, but generally speaking, it can consume anything it contacts with greater or lesser degrees of success.

Power - Nearly immortal. You cannot kill it. But you can cut it down to size, then starve it. A plant starved of food goes into a torpor (think hybernation) until conditions improve... ie: until it contacts food. It's the same state it's spores are in. Also, if you cut it down to size, it has to regrow, which takes time.

Weakness: Undiscerning - the plant doesn't understand that life exists beyond it, and if it did understand, probably wouldn't care. It goes where the food is. Period. That means it doesn't understand the concept of traps.

Weakness: Senses. The plant can feel pain, heat, pressure, etcetera, but is effectively blind to whatever is shortly beyond the tendril's reach. It has a rudimentary sense of where nutrition lies around the tendrils. If you're nearby it'll coil right around you. If you're a ways away, it doesn't know you exist. People won't be chased so much as unfortunately get too close.

Weakness: starvation. If the plant finds insufficient food to keep itself fed, it will go into torpor until such time as more food becomes available. This is how it's spores survive space travel.

::edit::
Forgot one weakness: Detectable. The plant doesn't understand the concept of being sneaky. As it's taproots grow, a network of seismic sensors would detect unusal seismic activity. Also due to it's ferocious metabolism it produces great quantities of heat, which would be detectable with sensitive instruments or say, by some guy with powers over light who stopped to think that heat is just infrared photons.

If you need any more information, lemme know. :D

Name: Rania
Age: 24
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 120lbs
Character type: Illusionist

Once upon a time, Rania was Rebecca desCartes, an incredibly talented student of illusions. Unfortunately Rebecca's psychic exertions proved her downfall, causing a massive cranial implosion and leaving her psychotic, paranoid and mentally subhuman.

These days Rania walks the streets under a number of illusionary guises, conning, thieving, and murdering. When posing as someone else, Rania can act 'normal', easily assuaging the suspicions of others. Stripped of her illusions, however, Rania is a rambling, dangerous psychotic whose misshapen head still bears the scars of her magical folly.

I used to use her in an RPG about six years ago, the best things would be when she'd create a hundred illusionary-arrows and then shoot a single real one at someone, so they'd think there was a hail of arrows... It was pretty cool. All her illusions though are either audible, smell-able or visible, she can't make tactile ones.

Rania also comes with a picture I doodled using my mouse. It's very bad.

In the game, I played the plant. The spore landed in the desert and found minimal food. Its growth was stunted. Scientists found it, brought it to the lab, and it broke out. One of the scientists was a superhero, and upon eating him, the plant gained intelligence and the ability to communicate telepathically. Also, it got curious.

So I played whatever tendrils were nearby. At one point, to communicate effectively, I crawled some tendrils up to a security guard, found a "natural opening", ate his guts, and animated him like a hand puppet. Alien intelligence... I figured it'd be easier to communicate with these critters (people) if I looked like them.

The GM wasked me if my character had any skills, any whatsoever, in puppeteering. Imagine if you will a lopsided security guard, obviously levitating, it's limbs articulating in ways not normally applied to healthy humans, held up by a large orange tendril coming out of his butt and digging into the ground, leaving a deep rut behind it.

It didn't work so well.

Hmmn. I played a superhero called Fetch that eventually became a villain...

Fetch was an alien android, sent to Earth to contact us and become an ambassador to our race. But the space capsule was shot down and Fetch was damaged in a way that gave him free will and removed his instructions and memory. (Were I rewriting this today, I'd have him captured by the military and tinkered with, and their tinkering screwed him up.)

As an ambassador android, Fetch had two powers. One was incredible sonic/linquistic skills, allowing him to emulate sounds and speak any language (and, in self-defense, project sonic attacks). The other was the ability to change shape to match the species he was contacting. Freed of his purpose, he was able to project sonic beams at will and shapechange into anyone.

He dabbled as a superhero for a while, but then decided the hell with it. He murdered a policitian, assumed the man's identity and got elected to congress. He never really had any goals other than finding his origin (no memories, remember) and self-profit. But he doesn't have any conscience or morals, either. He makes a very good politician. :)

If you want him you can have him. Make him Mayor of Pharos City, or a mayoral candidate.

By the way, the name 'Fetch' comes from a celtic legend, of creatures that assumed the shape of a loved one to lure you out of your home so they could devour you. :) The Fetch were basically land-dwelling versions of Kelpies or Sirens.

This one's actually an RPG character I'm Working on but you're welcome to use her. The final version will probably be different anyway.

The original was meant to be an anthropromorphic rabbit but adapting her to a human wouldn't be much troble.

Name: Legato Sin (Usually just called Sin)
Age: 15
Eyes: Red
Hight: 5'
Weight 110lbs (Naturally less but metal parts increases her weight)
Built: Almost sickly thin
Skin: Sickly pale
Hair: Navy Blue (or black)

Goals: Kill everyone she's ordered to, Aquire hands capable of playing the Piano, Kill Boss, Kill self.

Powers and abillities:

Agillity: Sin is an incredible acrobat capable of reacting with extreme speed and dexterity, even fast enough to dodge a bullet. She's able to run on walls for short distances, jump incredible hights and perform a veriety of mid air manuvers.

Marksmanship: Sin carries two semi automatic handguns "Blame" and "Shame". She's trained to shoot quickly with inhuman accuracy, and shoot independantly with each hand. (In other words she could headshot two guys in different directions at the same time)

Unlimited Ammo: She never runs out of bullets. In the RPG her guns are fueled by chaos emerald (sonic) shards, so you'll have to think up another power source.

Hover and Glide: Sin's coat is made of a memory fabric that can form a pair of wings which act like a hang glider when an electric current is applied allowing her to catch air and glide long ditances, or briefly hover in place. She often uses this to rain down bullets on her enemies.

Robotic Strength: (arms only) Sin's hands are robotic prosthetics. They posess superior strength to any normal hands, but aren't as dexteric as her once human hands.

Backstory:
Legato was never a healthy child. Too thin, too pale, sometimes too weak to get out of bed. However she had a deep love for music, and was very tallented in playing the piano. Her parents encouraged her and with instruction and practice her tallent blossomed. She enjoyed the best life could offer. The best of teachers both musical and acedimic, servants, posessions, the newest medicines, and the most well trained doctors. She had everything.

A child doesn't much wonder where the money comes from. Crime? Politics? Extortion? Legato never learned the truth but her parents had crossed the wrong people.

On her eight birthday a ticking package arrived at the door. Feeling well enough to walk downstairs and retrieve it she pulled the ribbon, felt something hot in her face, heard, a loud, noise, a sharp silence, and then nothing.

When she awoke she was laying on a table. Her hands heart like nothing she'd ever felt before. A portly yet tough looking middle aged man was standing there. He looked like a doctor but the room looked like no hospital. It was dark, dirty, ding,y and damp.

"Amazing isn't it? At the epicenter of the blast, barely strong enough to walk, yet you were the only survivor...." He siad.

"....my hands hurt." She replied. "Unlikely...." Was the only answer he gave.

One week later there stood a frail looking girl, with new hands. Hands of cold metal that did not feel like her own, holding something she'd never held before. A gun. "I saved your life, I've given you new hands, and a new chance. I even fixed that weak heart of yours. Now you have to pay me back." He said presenting a series of human shaped targets. "You begin today. Shoot each of them in the head. Keep shooting until you've hit them all. If you miss shoot again. If you hit the wrong spot, shoot again. Keep shooting until you've hit every target. From now on I'm your father, your owner, and your master. You'll call me Boss."

Little Legato was deathly afraid. She followed the instructions given to her, for lack of any other course to follow.

Later Legato sat upon a piano bench over the smashed and splintered remnants of a baby grand piano.

"My hands....wont' play. Why can't they play?" She asked. "Your new hands are stronger, better. You don't need to worry about such dellicate things anymore." Boss answered. "I want to play Piano again. But these hands won't do it." Legato replied sobbing intot he cold metal. "You're
not a pianist anymore. You're property, you're a tool, a weapon. Don't waste my time with such trivial things."

Legato curled into a ball and began sobbing uncontrollably. She wasn't going to listen to him. At least not until the next thing he said. "Sin, I
want you to kill all of the bad people in this world. When you've finished
with all of that I'll make you new hands that can play the Piano." He promised patting her on top of the head.

It was with intense furvor and a child's honest believe that she resumed her training. She bacme stronger, faster, mearciless, and eventually psychotic.

Today's Legato Sin holds no place in her heart for love or justice. Only a single minded obsession. Kill everyone Boss tells her to. As she has grown older she realizes that Boss has no intention of giving her new hands or letting her go. She lives for the day she can find the courage to kill him, and then herself.

Flaws:

Rage: Sin when she becomes frustrated flies into an uncontrollable rage, smashing everything in sight.

Nihilistic: She doesn't seem to place any value on her own life.

Undexteric: The only parts of Sin's body lacking her amazing and nible grace are her hands. She crushes dellicate objects, and attempts at writing usually result in snapped pencils, shredded paper, and gouges in the table beneth. Usually triggers her rage flaw.

A mocking, teenage speedster, able to move faster than Lightbringer can react---a thief, not a killer---who makes fun of Lightbringer's more pompous and black-and-white judgements. Grented Lightbringer's bolts of light are faster than anything else, he still has to aim and release them---and if this speedster can move FASTER than Lightbringer's reactions, he could slap Lightbringer silly before he could blink. You could call him the Blur. (How does Lightbringer beat him? That's YOUR problem. But he would have to use his brains, which always makes for a big story.)

A dragonoid alien from humanity's future, out to destroy certain key genetic lines before they culminate in those who crushed his warlike culture. He releases clouds of mist that absorb even Lightbringer's laserlikelight, (a defense against the laserlike weapons of the future) rendering him effectively powerless...and the dragonoid alien is huge and powerful, and can easily overcome Lightbringer one-on-one. He might call himself Ominous, since his name cannot be pronounced by human tongues.

A rock star who uses subliminals in his music to influence his fans and followers, who similarly to the first guy makes fun of Lightbringer's rather strict moral standards and can influence hundreds of innnocents to attack Lightbringer. He can also master other sonic effects, blast Lightbringer with "white noise", for instance. A sort of cross between Flash's Pied Piper, GL's Sonar, and the Black Panther's Klaw, he'd use his rock concerts to gain control of greater and greater segments of society, and use his followers to divert funds from themselves, their parents, and their businesses to his Swiss Bank Account. Call him the Idol.

How's that, for starters?

Name: Bruiser (working name, feel free to change)
Age: 38
Eyes: Brown
Height: 2 meters
Weight: 140 Kg
Build: Huge in a powerful way
Skin: Olive
Hair: Greying brown

Goals: Wipe out crime.

Powers: No "super" powers to speak of, but has years of training and experience in urban warfare, stealth combat, munitions, to the point of being nigh unbeatable. Favors stealth in uncertain situations, raw power in situations he's confident about, and when dealing with Lightbringer, a combination of stealth, and traps involving heavy artillery.

Backstory: Bruiser and his family lived in Pharos ever since he quit his top secret special ops job to be at home with his kids more. He worked at a nearby military base until funding was cut, then joined the Pharos PD. He knew what went on, but he turned a blind eye when the cops were in on it. The other cops didn't like his good cop attitude, and decided to do something about it.

Smitty (a bad cop, again - working name) had control of a couple of low street gangs, and had them gas Bruiser's house. When he woke up, the gang was just getting away in their car. After a car chase, one of the gang's cars goes off an enbankment - the one with his kids in it. The other gang car stops on the other side of the bridge, bruiser gets out to find the car in flames, one of the thugs trying to crawl out while on fire. His kids are dead. He kicks the thug, grabs his gun and turns around to see the four gangsters from the other car standing on the road, holding guns to his wife's head. The one holding her says, "We own this town! You ain't gonna clean us up!" and they shoot.

Bruiser goes berzerk, kills the gang members in an unscrupulous fashon, (i.e. he does not just shoot them.) and gets back in his car. He drives to Smitty's house, beats on him for four hours, all the time yelling "I'm cleaning up this town starting with YOU!" Eventually, Smitty dies, and Bruiser goes to the military base to get hardware.

Bruiser feels he has to clean up the city, no matter what the cost. If a gang has a hideout under a library he feels he can't take out on his own, he will simply bomb the entire library. His motives are pure, his methods are not - to the point he can be considered a villan.

edit - forgot costume!
Well, actually now that i think of it a costume would be a little odd for such a character, but since he relies so much on camoflauge he would most likely wear something akin to that fellow in the splinter cell game, but with like, a bazooka and some greandes and junk strapped to it. Very military looking.

Also forgot to note that he is smart - and he fights smart. He knows he is less powerful than lightbringer, but brings him down by watching how he works. See: Dark Knight Returns - how batman fights superman.
