Eh, but it doesn't do wonders to art career.

Well, Asterix had it's ups and downs. I don't like it particulary, I think of it as a production-line comic with no identity and only occasional great episodes, but many other people would beg to differ, and it's quite influential on French scene overall. But what noone denies is that it declined in quality greatly since writer's death. I've haven't read the last album but I've read previous ones and they're practically an embarrasment. The last one got horrible reviews, it's actually a fiction with occasional illustrations. Yes, selling of the books doesn't decline, every new issue practically makes a romp at bookstores.

Disney characters actually work quite well here, Italian studios keep licence to them and their approach is much more stylish and inventive than American.

I've only read older Asterix books by the creator. Duck books wise; I really like Carl Barks and Don Rosa's stuff when it comes to the American creators. I wouldn't know much about the italian works.

Asterix had some good albums in it's best days. But I personally prefere Lucky Luke. :)

Even though I know I probably shouldn't, but I'd also like to make a humble request to be nominated. Maybe for the newcomer award.

Hmm... I don't think my comic deserves any nominations for 2005. :-?

Maybe next year.

Unless Sincerely wants to nominate Chiv for Outstanding Character Design :P.

There's no reason you can't request a nomination. But remember that it's up to the community of creaters to get on the ballot. So make sure that your fellow artists have seen your work.

Since my comic only started this month, I don't see any point in stumping for a nom; it's too new even for the Newcomer Award, I imagine. I look forward to doing a little campaigning next year, though. Also to voting this year, never had the chance before.

Can we nominate other people, or can we only nominate ourselves? Because while I take great pride and joy in my own creation (READ IT NOW, SUCKAZ), there are many as-of-yet unknown luminaries out there who deserve way more credit than I.

Is this Ian J as in Ian J from Bag of Chips (and a zillion other strips)?

I know you might not think it based on most people's self-pimpage, but nominating other people is the whole idea of these awards.

Once the official nomination round opens, voters will be nominating 3 comics in each category. So even if they do nominate themselves, they're also creating 2 nominations that will compete against themselves.

Meanwhile, YES! Please feel free to discuss ANY comics that are out there that deserve to be looked at by the voting party. Most of us are dying for suggestions for who to nominate.

Thanks,
Mark

I'll take this opportunity to then talk about Komiyan's comic Darken. Since it's been forced to update regulary the quality of the strips and the story have improved tremendously. It's a story where you follow the bad guys trying to destroy the world in a fantasy setting.

Oh good!

Some early recommendations: (The categories I've placed each in were just sort of matched at the spur of the moment, and don't necessarily fit too well in some cases, but I heartily recommend checking out each of these)

I Am A Rocket Builder for Outstanding Environmental Design. It splits one story between four different environments-- very cool. Plus it's pretty funny, and it does some interesting experimentation with Flash.

Here There Be Robots for Outstanding Story Concept. Some friendly aliens and malicious robots accidentally arm a souped-up copy machine that sends them back in time to the days when pirates roamed the high seas. What more could you possibly want?

Norm and Cory for Outstanding Character Art. This guy makes small woodland creatures interesting to look at. Plus the story manages to be very long without getting boring at any one part (possibly also eligible for Best Long Form Comic?).

Panda Express for Outstanding Newcomer. Why this comic is not mind-blowingly famous by now, I have no idea. High-grade art, layered story, memorable characters... this one's got it all, ladies and gentlemen.

Y? for Outstanding Character Writing. Rarely are anthropomorphic characters written with such depth and realism, plus the distinctive art style is easy on the eyes. A definite must-read. (Also possible nominee for Best Anthro Comic?)

Templar, Arizona for Outstanding Environment Design. Who wouldn't want to live in a city as endearingly off-kilter as Templar?

Toothpaste for Dinner, Natalie Dee, or Married to the Sea for Outstanding Single-Panel Comic. This husband-and-wife team keep churning out ridiculous little drawings that, were it not for copyright laws, would be adorning novelty T-shirts in Hot Topics and Kohl's department stores everywhere.

Horribleville for Outstanding Slice-of-Life Comic. KC Green haunts my dreams, he is so good at making comics. Be sure to check out his other comics, Anger Pauly and The Daily Droop for more.

Dresden Codak for Outstanding Layout. If you liked A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible (and if that doesn't get at least nominated for Outstanding Comic this year, I will weep uncontrollably over the injustice), but wished there was just a skosh more humor in it, viddy this relative newcomer. It's comics... for smart people!

More to come... in the meantime, keep searching for the next big thing, guys!

2nded!! also, "the noob" is a must for gaming comic as well.

i'd also really like to see 8:1 nominated for something although i dunno how feasible that is.

also tales of the traveling gnome for best artist and edible dirt for single panel comic

i think a lot of my picks would be obscure people with no chance of winning so i'm only suggesting people who are already kinda famousy (for example, i'd pick the children of moloch for outstanding comic in an instant)

edit: also if achewood doesn't get nominated again for outstanding writing i'm gonna FUCKING SHOOT SOMEBODY

You can nominate my webcomic :p

For what categories, take your pick.

Let's just hope I don't see twenty megatokyo or penny arcade awards again.

I'd have to suggest Nothing Better for writing or slice-of-life. But then again I'd probably recommend Better Days for the same thing...

Whoever it was that suggested Darken, I totally second that!

I just wanted to keep "Hector!" in runnings for Outstanding Newcomer, Outstanding Black and White and Outstanding Fantasy. We're currently competing in Bombshelter's Webcomic Idol Competition. Be sure to give us a look at the very least!
