Possible replacement for the WCCA

Post by Novil »

We would like to know if there is hope for the Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards to come back at least next year. We believe that the webcomic community needs at least one general webcomic award and so we have started planning a new award in case the WCCA should be dead.

to those of you organizing this new set of awards i urge you not to forget about photo webcomics, and this is not an attempt to push my own comic, if i am or am not nominated doesn't concern me, but there are quite a few good photocomics out there and I find they are often ignored in larger categories as simply not being as good as other drawn comics.

Hi.
I hope this post isn't too cheeky of me. I don't mean it to be.

I'm one of the forum admins over at The Webcomic List and I found this thread whilst doing a quick google search.

A while back now some of our forum members were discussing the WCCAs and thought it was a shame that it didn't look like there was going to be one this year. It was suggested that it might be an idea to try and do one ourselves, so I offered to run the whole affair if my bosses at the site said yes, which they did and I've been working with a small committee of people since to get this thing going.

The nomination process went live today.

The basics of the awards are pretty similar to how the WCCAs have done things in the past. It's open to webcomic creators, but we've also opened it up to other people involved in webcomics as well, such as bloggers, podcast presenters, site administrators and so on, basically anyone that makes some kind of input into webcomics as a whole.

We have an open nomination period, which is from today until the 13th of December and then the five comics in each category go through to a small panel of judges. The members of the panel vary from comic to comic. There's a page listing who they all are on the awards section of the site. All the committee members and judges are completely excluded from being nominated for any awards and so are any site staff not involved in the awards.

If you're interested in knowing any more the site is now live at http://www.thewebcomiclist.com/awards/

Oh, and Dr Legostar if you're reading this, although there isn't a dedicated photo-comic award, there are three different art awards - Best Black and White Art, Best Colour Art and Best Non-Traditional Art. This last one covers the likes of photo-comics, pixel art, collage and 3D models.

Cool! I like the WCCA; the nominations give me a great chance to learn of good comics that I have not yet seen. Also, I have fun when I do "presentation comics."

Hi.

Just letting everyone know that The Webcomic List Awards finally went live a short while ago over at http://www.thewebcomiclistawards.com

Unfortunately we had to drop a couple of categories (Most Improved Comic, The Innovation Award, Best Supporting Character) because there simply weren't any clear leaders for the judges to choose between, with loads of comics with only one nomination each. I'm sorry about that, but we just couldn't find a way to keep those categories in under those circumstances.

Hey.
I hope it's okay to revive threads this old.

I'm just popping in to say, for those that are interested, the 2010 Webcomic List Awards have just opened for nominations. The same rules apply as last year. Anybody involved in the creation, distribution or promotion of comics, print or web, can nominate comics. Comics created by anyone involved in the running of the awards or who is acting as a judge this year can't be nominated for any awards of course, or your own.

Considering that last year was our first year I'm really happy with how well things went, but this year we're hoping the awards will be even bigger and better. We have some great judges on board this year including John Allison of Scary Go Round and Bad Machinery, former 2000AD and Judge Dredd editor turned screenwriter David Bishop, Phillipa Rice of My Cardboard Life, Ed Power and Melissa DeJesus of My Cage and Kurt Hathaway, a veteran of the comic industry who's worked for the likes of DC, Image, Marvel, Eclipse and DarkHorse amongst others.

Basically, we're going all out to try and outdo last year and to make these awards the best they can possibly be because, I personally at least, think it's great that we've had something like the WCCAs and that it's important to keep something similar going that can help promote webcomics in general, to get the community involved and to act as a place for people wanting to read some good comics to get some good suggestions.

Anyway, that's enough preachiness from me.

Hey Everyone,
Just thought I would introduce myself properly, I'm Jessica Ottowell, Designer, Developer and Admin of the Webcomic List Awards (and of gilbertandgrim.com).

I thought I might as well make myself known and mention that if you have any issues please don't hesitate to contact me (at jesso -at- f5cd.com), please DON'T contact the webcomic list staff about problems with the awards site as they can't fix them without my help (and, well its just quicker to contact me).

Thanks

Jessica Ottowell

Just a note for those that haven't made any nominations yet, there's just twelve days to go before the nomination stage closes, so hop to it!
