Other webcomics

Post by Illithid Tentacles »

There's GGC of course, which we all know and love, but what are some others you read?

http://www.somethingpositive.net/ is one of my favorites. I read through the entire archives in two days when I first found it. Note that the first comic doesn't really set the tone for the rest of the strips. Might want to skip this one if you don't care for irreverant humor. It centers on the pessimistic Davan and his small circle of friends as they try to muddle through thier everyday lives. It's fairly realisitc, for a webcomic. Mostly humor, though there are a couple damatic moments.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html Order of the Stick. It's based on the D&D 3.5 edition rules, but you don't have to be a hardcore D&D player to enjoy it- the jokes requiring knowledge of D&D rules don't crop up that often. It focuses on a group of adventurers fighting a lich, which is a powerful undead wizard, for those of you who aren't familiar with them. Also mostly humor with drama here and there.

http://www.collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.html Sequential Art, despite being a "furry" comic, is pretty good. Just because there are anthro animals in it doesn't neccisarily make it a comic that can only be enjoyed by furries, and there aren't any furry inside jokes that I've noticed. Plus, one of the main characters is a cute cat girl, which I think everyone can appreciate. Again, mostly humor.

http://tmi-comic.com/2005/05/05/out-of-the-nest/ Too Much Information. I don't consider it to be that great, but I find it entertaining enough to check for updates every couple days. It focuses on a computer progarmmer named Ace and his daily life, which includes vampires and ghosts. Sort of a drama.

http://venusenvy.comicgenesis.com/d/20011106.html Venus Envy, which I've linked to at least once before. It centers on a male-to-female transgender teenager, and the struggles and complications that accompany being transgender. Mostly drama and "slice-of-life".

http://www.thebookofbiff.com/ The Book of Biff. Pick a comic, any comic, and you can expect more of the same from pretty much all the others. A gag-a-day strip kinda like The Far Side. Humor.

http://xkcd.com/ XKCD, which I linked to in the "Hyphen" thread. There are a few minor story arcs that last about half a dozen strips or so. As the title bar describes it, "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." You kinda have to read it to really see what it's about.

Finally, http://www.nuklearpower.com/index.php 8-Bit Theatre. Probably among the most popular webcomics, it's a parody of Final Fantasy 1, though you don't neccisarily have to hve played it or even know anything about it to enjoy it, though some of the more ludicrous parts are almost directly from the game (like the bridge). It alo parodies a lot of other things as well, mostly typical nerd stuff.
It is very dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I would say the only one i read with any regularity anymore is http://www.sinfest.net/. Hard to describe because he does like two different comics almost at times.

Still a fan of http://www.illwillpress.com/ home of Foamy the Squirrel, your lord and master.

I'd list all of mine but I'd break the forum. I've read all of the ones listed so far though. :)

I think one of my favorite webcomics of all time is Questionable Content.

Eh, I tried Venus Envy, but it's one of those comics where I'm never sure whether it's going to be humorous or dwama, so I gave up on it.

The ones I do read, however ... I read Errant Story, xkcd, Order of the Stick, and ...

Part 1!
  • Resonance -- a kid who looks identical to Naruto but is in fact a demon himself must dodge demon-hunters and stuff.
  • Sailor Ranko - A somewhat badly-done crossover between Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2. (The author is REALLY bad at transitions, with mediocre drawing and ... okay story, I guess. Still not quite sure why I'm reading it ...)
  • PS238 - From the creator of Nodwick comes a comic book about an elementary school for kids with superpowers!
  • Garfield Minus Garfield - Various Garfield comic strips, with Garfield photoshopped out of them.
  • Gremlin World - A genetically-created bunnygirl gets into all kinds of mischief. And it's all her "dad's" fault, mostly ...
  • Bunny - Surrealism and bunnyrabbits!
  • The Accursed Cabinet - One of my friends (who isn't aware of my "kittyboymuffin" personality, as far as I know) makes it. It's exactly what it says on the tin.
  • Dresden Kodak, originally a fairly dadaist comic, it has since shifted into a cyberpunk-esque story with the main character as the offspring of a deux ex machina and a Mary Sue. I'm sort of just holding out for it to return to the goofy stuff ...
  • LevelUp Comics - The creator of Gold Digger plays Final Fantasy XI.

Would you believe I had the idea for the very same topic just today, but I was at our summer place, and couldn't come to the forums.

Anyway, my list. Organised them in the order I visit them on my daily web-routine;
Little-Gamers Found it in like 03-04, just kept reading, even though it updates sparsely and is even more rarely actually funny. But it has its moments.
Sinfest Has gotten a bit weird lately
Commissioned Pretty funny daily slice-of-life/RPG comic.
Order of the Stick and Erfworld Nothing much to say. EF could update more often...
Ctrl-Alt-Del MISCARRIAAAAAAAAGE. I just snark the strips these days.
Chugworth Another semi-dead one I read from routine.
GGC Another dead one I read the forums for.
Sosiaalisesti Rajoittuneet The only notable regularry updating Finnish webcomic. Sturgeons law thus states that it sucks 90% of the time. And what do you know, unfunny jokes and pointless fanservice make up most of the strips.
Questionable Content Nothing much to say.
The Noob Another old-timer, updates a few times a week, jokes funny about once a month.
Nothing Nice To Say (On Hiatus) and My Stupid Life by the same artist. Funny stuff, but I wish he'd get back at drawing NN2S soon.
VG Cats Next comic will be up after Duke Nukem Forever is released, I assume.
El Goonish Shive Jumped the shark in reverse; the new strips are better than the old ones. Still, a bit weird comis, one of those you feel a bit guilty reading.
DMFA Suprisingly good fantasy furry webcomic, always helps when the artist doesn't take herself too seriously, but also refrains from breaking the fourth wall.
XKCD Hype backlas is starting to kick in. It's clever, I give you that, but people should stop acting like it cures cancer, aids, and also does you taxes.
DAILY DINOUSAUR COMICS AWESOME.
Darths And Droids Highly reccomended.
Menage a 3 Newest addition, just started reading it last week. Promising so far.

Also:
The Nonadventures of Wonderella and The Pain on weekends.
The gospel preacher, the hostile teacher/The face of God with an impostor's features
This is the prophecy - the cult leader/The people's temple, the holy ground, the war compound
Four-pound to rifles, disciples, the holy idles/Supreme truth, the cult leader with the green tooth
The multi-millionaire with a stare that can freeze troops/I program people to kill
The motiviational speaker, my words cause people to feel/It's mind control, let the cult leader guide your soul
Open up your eyes to the lies he told/The general, the chief, I be the political pioneer
The cult leader, you can believe in me, I am here/Bless the children, take you under my wing, shelter
Helter Skelter, this is it, you can't kill me I'll exist forever. Cult Leader!

I must also confess that, reading Darths and Droids, I've been imagining Chancellor Valorum's voice being somewhat like Alan Rickman as Professor Snape (parttly because I can't actually imagine what his voice sounded like in the actual movies).

I can understand how that might bother someone, although I myself actually don't mind mixing humor and drama from time to time, nor do I mind unpredictability. I presume that you're talking about your "dwama" here, rather than what you define as standard drama, but I think it still applies. For me, at least, drama can be a central element in a story without ruining it. But then again, I'm me and you're you. (This had more of a point in my head. It's not intended as a criticism, merely as an observation.)

I don't read anything really consistently, but my more frequent reads, in no particular order, are:
xkcd -- Yes, I know everyone and their dog sucks its dick, and I don't care. It's a damn tasty dick.
Achewood -- I love this one, but I don't read it very often anymore. I stopped reading it for too long, and now a huge amount of plot has happened and I have trouble following what's going on without engaging in a truly massive archive binge.
Friendly Hostility -- Nothing much to say here. Just plain good, and its misanthropic humor is actually creative from time to time. I also liked the now-finished Boy Meets Boy by the same person.
To Save Her (and Pastel Defender Heliotrope and Unicorn Jelly) -- Nearing its end. It's all right, but I liked the original Unicorn Jelly more.
Questionable Content -- Got turned on to it recently. There are a lot of music references I'm not familiar with, but it has refreshingly competent writing and the characters are neither cardboard nor obnoxious self-inserts.
Order of the Stick -- Yeah, I know, another popular dick to suck. I don't even play Dungeons and Dragons and I still think it's funny.
El Goonish Shive -- For some reason, although this is far from my favorite, it's the one I check the most often. It may be because I'm still curious as to what part of its Kudzu Plot will get addressed (to say nothing of resolved) next.
The Bare Pit -- It's really nothing special; when you get down to it its bread and butter is really fairly typical sitcom-like situations. Part of why I read it is I like seeing how the author addresses various aspects of naturist politics/etiquette/social dynamics, e.g. children's responses to nudism, towel etiquette, privacy concerns, and body issues like mastectomies.
Menage a 3 -- It's just starting, granted, but I'll be interested in seeing where it goes.
Sexy Losers -- I like the swearing guy. He is an inspiration to us all to curse creatively.
Looking For Group -- Richard utterly steals the show, but it's still an all-around good comic.
Why are you staring at my bottom?

When I say "dwama", I mean "dwama", not "standard!drama" :P

And hey, like I said in my previous LJ post about EGS -- I'm sure there are some people for whom soap-operatics is it's own reward, it's just that I'm not one of them.

*is now feeling bleghy due to having read a couple of dwamaaaatic Touhou doujins ... x.x*

Oh, and I have a webcomic of my own. :3

Agreed, it's a delightful blend of anime, manga, and video game tropes.

I have concepts for multiple comics myself (print or web), but none of them are anywhere near ready to be actual comics at this time.
