I saw a bright light just above the tree line. It moved with the car like it was following me. I stopped the car and got out to get a better look, and the light moved so that is was hovering just above the road.

I got scared and started to get back in the car, but i couldn't move.

talk.

Odds make it nigh impossible to not have some form of life elsewhere in the universe. Sentient life, probably that too, somewhere.

But Greys landing on earth, stealing our cows and probing our anuses (anusii?)? Hell naw.

If there is intelligent life out there in the universe, why the hell would they come here? And based onMOST of the people who claim to have seen/been abducted by aliens, even if they did come check us out, I am sure they have left giving up on us as such an inferior species intelligence wise. Why is it always the dumb hick that gets abducted and has his anus probed? I think it's more likely that Clem and Cletus were fucking behind the barn and they each need an excuse for why they didn't show up for the Klansmen against Fags hate rally.

Now do I think there are unexplained lights etc that people see ? Sure. Do I know what they are? Not a clue, but I doubt alien. I have a feeling alot of the UFOs are actually experimental aircraft either military in nature so very hush hush, or some genius experimenting in his garage, who decides to fuck with people a little. Then of course there are will-o-wisps

Or, in other words, ball lightning. Which is pretty dang cool, if disconcerting.

The energy costs for exploring other plants are FREAKING INSANE.

I don't doubt that there is other life out there, but I do doubt that it has come calling.

Humans did not understand, nor use, radio waves until the 1860s.

Think about that for a minute. That means the only signals that have been send from out planet were sent about 150 years ago. Radio travels at the speed of light...so even if someone is listening with immensely powerful radioscopes.....they can't know about us unless they are within 150 light years of the planet earth.

Life on other planets? Likely.

Life on other planets with radioscopic technology? Not likely.

Life on other planets using that technology to scan the universe, if they have it? Yeah, I'd think so.

That civilization existing within 150 light years of earth? Gimme a fucking break.

The reason why I emphasize radio waves is because that's most likely the basic form of interstellar communication. I mean, that's SETI listens for.

About the same as the power requirements of an X-box 2075.

(And by then people will still be arguing whether Bill Gates really said "640 KiloWatts should be enough for anyone" back at the release of the X-box 2030). :D

Reminds me of a joke I heard once.

A father and a son were wathcing the moon landing* on TV. THe son asked:
"Dad, do you think there is intelligent life outside earth"
"Yes I do"
"How come"
"Because clearly, they don't spend billions of their taxpayers money to look for intelligent life"

It's "among."

I pretty much agree with "probably exists, but the odds of either of us finding each other is bloody unlikely."

It would be horrible to find life on other planets and find it even more messed up than we are.

There was an interesting yet tragic short story I read a little while ago, I think it was in Harry Harrison's 50 best short stories. Anyway, it was about us finally finding another alien species after thousands of years of searching, and they were radically different than us, and the two species compared DNA. They were so excited at first, but then they found out that they were both human, just evolved in two different directions because they had traveled in opposite directions around the galaxy as they colonized planets. Much like the Eastern and Western cultures of today. Needless to say, they were very disappointed.

I'm never sure whether to be amused or irritated when people say, "It must have been aliens, it couldn't have been anything else!" - when really, pretty much any explanation is likelier than aliens. Marsh gas? Secret government experiment? Kids dicking around with a new toy? Mass hallucination? Yep, all more likely than the possibility that aliens travelled light-years to get to Earth, did nothing but draw designs in our crops and shine pretty lights in the sky, and then leave without any other trace.

If you mean the guy who keeps getting cheap and malfunctioning prosthetic limbs, then yes. XD I've also read almost all of the Stainless Steel Rat books. Pity they're so hard to find.

well, yeah.
Because we didn't spend all that money to go to the moon.
We spent it to show those Rooskies that our artificial penis was bigger than theirs.

If there is life out there that hasn't figured this shit out yet, they've already blown themselves up. (part of the Drake equation). Hell. They've probably already blown themselves up. And if they haven't, we're probably going to blow ourselves up. Or burn ourselves up. One or the other. Doesn't matter. Bunch of fucking assholes anyway. i'd say there is a good possibility of other life out there, hell even maybe some sentient life but i doubt they will want anything to do with us until we get our shit together so to speak.

i've always thought for a sentient race to expand beyond it's homeworld effectively requires a bit more racial unity than we seem to be capable of.

heh i personally think we'll either blow ourselves up or regress back to a more primitive state of of being Feudal/pre-industrial life since most governments of the world seem to short sighted to realise that we are running out of time on this planet and either have to secure resources from other planets in the system or regress.

Please pardon my rant; but, this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine:

Outside of using microgravity for scientific studies and satelites, our space program is a monumental waste of time, effort, and money, I mean honestly, even if there is intelligent life on other planets, it really doesnt matter.

we are 1 AU from the sun ( 93,000,000 miles or 150,000,000 km) away from the sun...

The distance that light travels (in a vacuum) in a year is 63,241 AU

Apollo 11 has the record for the highest relative speed to earth at 0.000037 times the speed of light (11.1 km/s, 24,790 mph).

If we want to go to the star closest to our solar system (proxima centauri) is 268,000 A.U. (24,924,000,000,000 miles or 40,200,000,000,000 km)

it takes light ~ 4.24 years to go from here to there

it would take apollo 11: 114,594.595 years to get there

even if we can get up to 1% of lightspeed, that's still 424 years to get to *the closest* solar system (besides the one we're in)

what if we can go light speed? its still 4.24 years for a 1-way trip with no rest stops, no new supplies, no more fuel, no more anything. Dealing with the logistics of food/waste/cosmic-radiation/bacterial growth inside the capsule/stuff I havent even considered...

Take home message:

Space travel is a waste of time/effort/money
There will be no extra-terrestrial life visiting earth.
and so, who gives a shit as to whether or not there's extra-terrestrial life?

little green men = bullshit! (You're more likely to see an angel or jim morrison)

I mean, honestly, if the effort/money/attention that's put into space exploration were directed towards other fields or toward furthering life and understanding on this planet, humanity would be much better off.

------------------------------

Earlier, I mentioned satelites and microgravity for scientific studies, those are good things!! I'm not condemning space-flight as a whole, just the search for extra-terrestrial life in all its forms, (those seti antenna arrays could be put to better use)

Also, I'll give credit where credit is due, a lot of technology was developed by/for NASA and has proven itself be of vital use in modern living; but the search for ET is a waste (in every possible way)

Also, I dont think less of people that do think this is a good idea, I just want to have the opportunity to change your mind. There are some very charismatic (and crazy) people that have dedicated their lives to this nonsense and it pains me to see them influence rational intelligent people into believing bunk.

------------------------------

I could go on; but, I'm starting to fall asleep as I type this, have a good night guys/gals.
