Reason #74 Commonwealth Countries are cooler than the US

Post by Honor »

The show "Just For Laughs".

The particular gag that made me post this, in the episode I just watched...

Imagine a convenience store. It's pretty busy... There's a delivery man making a delivery, and he has a clipboard that needs signed. There's a bloke buying a bag of crisps, another buying a soft drink, a couple other customers in various stages of selecting items and making purchases, and you've just made your purchase, and you're about to get your change.

As the clerk reaches out to hand you your change, time freezes. The clerk, every other customr in the store... All frozen, stock still. Absolutely motionless. Several seconds pass as you look around and the situation begins to register... Then everything starts up again, quite normally, as if nothing happened.

The look on the sole "customers" faces was... awesome.

There was another where an old woman was walking along and looked up, and her hat came off. Just as the person walking along behind her stooped to pick it up, she quickly slipped another, identical hat onto her head, and the good samaritan stands up to call out to her and sees... wtf?

Brilliant. :-)

Refering to "just for laughs gags" as "just for laughs" is confusing.

I've seen that show on tv before, very amusing. Especially the random yiffing in public. :D

My favourite is a tie between the people who round the corner to find a priest and a nun having a hot makeout session, and the little yappy dog who is surreptitiously replaced by a stuffie and given a good kick across the street.

I'm sorry... But, look at the bright side. If that's enough to tax your intellectual capabilities, you've got a very long and very difficult life ahead of you.

I saw the British version once, and although these hidden camera shows aren't my thing it did have me chuckling...
"OH, I'VE SEEN THE INFINITE, IT'S NOTHING SPECIAL."
"Don't be daft! you can't see the infinite, it's... infinite!"
"I HAVE."
"Ok then, what did it look like?"
"IT'S BLUE."
"It's black."
"IT'S BLUE."
"It's black!"
"FROM THE OUTSIDE IT'S BLUE..."

All hail Monty Python!

I miss The Young Ones. Are there reruns anywhere?

Two Ronnies in that case, but yes, Monty Python were greats!

You can get reruns, but the only ones I'm aware of are on the Sky sattelite channels, and not all that common. They should be on more ...

Yeah, I've seen that a couple of times. I just feel the canned laughter and the exxagurated sound effects underestimate the viewers, but meh.

Also, I used to wonder why no-one ever talked in the show, but then it hit me like an argument by Honor; Canada (or banada) is bi-lingual. English and French, so to not alienate eiher side, no talk. Period.

The show is filmed in Montreal, Quebec, a predominantly French speking province in our predominantly English speaking country. French dialogue would limit the market to one province, to sell the show nationwide, they would either have to dub it into english or avoid dialogue altogether.

I'm glad they decided to go the no-speking route, cheaper for them and it suits the style of the show better.

There is a seperate show called "just for laughs", so refering to it as that implies that you're talking about stand up comedy.

The Two Ronnies are very good. All their shows were done in front of a live studio audience. Thay didn't use "canned" laughter.
That clip looks subtly wrong I think it's been reversed left/right. Moot point.
They always used to do funny news stories at the ends of their shows and this one I remember:

Firemen took three hours to rescue Mr. Simon Griffin the church bellringer. He forgot to let go of the rope and caught his ding dong merily on high.

Saddly Ronnie Barker passed away last year.

Actually, I was talking about Just For Laughs. I generally enjoy brittish humour, such as Monty Python, Young Ones etc.

Referring to Quebec as a Commonwealth country is insulting to, let's see, slightly under 50% of its population. :P

For some reason I have no problem with insulting slightly under 50% of the Quebec population.

Well, it would definitely be incorrect, as Quebec is not a country. But, insofar as it is a province of Canada, it is definitely a de jure part of the Commonwealth.

The Qubecouis should accept the fact that the french government folded to the commonwealth. thers nothign that says that french colonies cant be part of the dynamic tapestry of the commonwealth. We still love ya, even if you spek a werid mangled dialect of french that even french people dont grock.

+20 nerd points for using "grok" in a sentence, -600 for spelling it wrong.
