Dude... I was -floored-

Post by Honor »

When I saw this in Barnes & Noble, and then later the same day in Borders. Borders had a color poster, too.

G. Dude. You need a book, man... The world needs GGC stamped on dead trees for children to find in school restrooms. Ok... So they probably wouldn't carry it in Borders or B&N... But dedicated comics stores, maybe?

Do you need volunteers for... assistants to do layout or editing or something...?

*nods vigorously* Ghastly should so get published. I'd buy some of that! And he could add extra pages as incentives... eh? eh?

Hell, several months ago I saw 7 foot high wallscrolls in a Waldenbook's window which were basically volume 3's cover, advertising the fact that manga was sold there.

A while back I saw a Broken Miho doll

It was pretty, course at the time I vaguely knew anything about Megatokyo

Like now, only even more so
Mary Mary quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.

... MT's been in print, like... forever....

Or perhaps you mean the fact that B&N/Borders carry it? yeah... they're branching out.

But still... that's old news, too.

So we can conclude some things, which, given the available information, are probably inaccurate, serving no purpose other than to inflate my postcount and garner attention.

Or am I being to honest?

Conclusions:

a.)Honor does not read much (unlikely)
b.)Honor does not go to bookstores much (unlikely, if a is false)
c.)Honor has tunnel-vision at bookstores

Then again... I don't go to bookstores much.

I'll be floored when I see it in a public library.

Or when they make an MT anime. :o

I'd be hard pressed to tell you what's in the comics ('scuse me, "graphic novels") section and books are one of my favorite pastimes.

I can tell you, well the manga section I don't know if they have a comic section, all Viz & Tokyopop manga, although I don't know if they discontinue older series, from when they started publishing things in exclusive Tankoubon format back in '01-'02. I still need to find out if they started carrying Dark Horse Manga, cause if my comic store skip up on the new volume of Oh My Goddess...

Err any way, yes MegaTokyo Manga volumes have been out forever. In fact in the same vain, one of my friend's manga was published in that Tokyopop Rising Star Manga book, unfortunately I don't remember what volume it was supposed to be in so I couldn't get a copy. Either way it doesn't seem that odd what with Tavicat's manga Reality Check getting published by Tokyopop. Now what I thought was weird was Tokyopop does stuff like the Kim Possible Comic, which is in no way a manga and is Disney.

Obviously someone around here didn't get the memo about manga going tankoubon style and getting in bookstores afew years back...

Though I should note you can find Shounen Jump at any local store with a magazine section, which also shows the change in handling manga.

I would however like to say, I'm not too sure if Ghastly could get published because of content. Only Tokyopop seems to be publishing non-Japanese works and they don't do H-manga. Plus from what I hear Eros Comics went bust, as I think Studio Proteus up and disappeared as no Dark Horse manga lists then as handling the work any more. Also I'm not sure if Sexy Fruit would do anything thing like that as it's so small. As for Bare Press, is it even still around, I know little of out side of it was the H-manga of CMPManga and which did the La Blue Girl manga.

Please note that for H-manga original there was Venus Comics, the H-division of Antarctic Press's manga line, which died with its non-h brethren and was taken over by Sexy Fruit, the h-division of Ironcat Studio which had taken over for AP (though they don't seem to have rights to the old series, so don't be expecting TPs of anything like the original Bondage Fairies, Vanity Angel, or Amazing Strip). Then Studio Proteus had Eros comics handle all manga too h for Dark Horse, but somethings went and change recently with manga handling change that happened in the past five years. While finally holding up the rear was Bear Press, which was CMPManga's H division created at about the same time as said, although oddly enough it didn't handle Midnight Panther or Chirality for that matter. All of these H-manga companies seem really small in comparison to Viz & Tokyopop so I don?t really no if they publish anything outside of Japanese manga.
So just what is Gainax trying to say here?

I'm waiting for seven foot wall scrolls of Peeps yelling "Tentacoo Wape!" in B&N.
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

I think the reason that Ghastly hasnt been picked up is due to his comics audience and subjects. Though I dont know what MegaTokyo is about.

Oh man, when those are mass-produced, I'm totally buying some for my room xD (ironically, my mom has only seen that comic, and thinks that Peep is adorable >_>;;; I think she thinks that "T W" is some sort of nonsense catchphrase like "Goo goo g?joob" )

Yea, I could deal with a 7 foot long Peep scroll around the cave. Only, I think I'd want to fly a couple of them from my ramparts.

b.)Honor does not go to bookstores much (unlikely, if a is false) (Again... Not as much as I'd like. Maybe once a week.)
c.)Honor has tunnel-vision at bookstores
To illustrate this last conclusion, I have produced an 80k visual aid... Pardon it's sloppiness, it was made in five minutes on my tablet. Pardon it's vagueness, also... It was made from memory.

A typical trip to Barnes and Noble (for Borders, change the floorplan, and delete the Starbucks trip). You can assume the word "browse" after the numbers... Could be anything from looking for new titles, to sitting indian style on the floor and reading, to just grabbing titles outright.
  1. Walk in the door and glance at the teasers... If it's cookbooks, I;ll be here a few seconds.
  2. Feel the lure of the Dark Side of the Sale Books, but resist.
  3. Periodicals... The Economist, Foreign Policy Review, Mental Floss, Utne Reader, Mother Jones... You get the idea.
  4. Perodicals... Computer graphics and web design trade journals, and poker magazines.
  5. Starbucks (shiver of anticipation)
  6. Browse the weird books and items at the Starbucks impulse counter
  7. *snoopy dance* Pick up my venti mocha frappacino with one pump cinnamon syrup and no whipped cream.
  8. Poker books... And the step I forgot to number but remembered to lable... Political humor. Jon Stewart, Al Franken, etc. (Read "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them"... It -still- rawks.)
  9. Computer books... Mostly web design and professional graphics apps.
(If I'm short on time, I might skip to step 21 or 23 now.)
  10. Religion and philosophy books... Gnostic bibles, books on non-christian religions.
  11. Political and poli-sci books, also conspiracy nut stuff like Disinfo.com books
  12. Film production books (often skipped)
  13. Women's studies / lesbian books, history, military, and law stuff.
  14. What's being promoted right now? (at this point, I'll very often skip to step 21)
  15. Cookbooks! If I make it this far, there's almost always some sitting and reading.
Now... notice how I sped right by the fiction section? I'm seriously (time) budgeted down to one or two novels a year now. It sucks. When I retire, I'm gonna pwn this section. If... You know... I'm not all busy with my hobbies. It's terrible, but the truth is... As much as I enjoy reading good prose (which is a lot) I enjoy almost all creative activities more... Drawing, writing, GMing...
  16. So... I noticed all these *ahem* "graphic novels" by the gaming books... And I know they're manga, but who has time to read manga? I -love- the art style, but I don't know which ones are good, which ones suck, which ones I'd like... I very badly -want- to read manga... But I don't want to waste time with bad ones. So I usually blow by here.
  17. Gaming books... I was shocked the first time I saw these here, too. But, again... Who has time to game? I still browse sometimes and buy books that look good, just because I refuse to accept the idea that I'll never game again. (and you know by now when I say "game" I mean real, live, role-playing games, right? Not shooters or stuff.)
  18. Coffee's robably gone by now. Time to visit the LGR.
  19. Language books... Major weakness. Major.
  20. If I have all the time in the world, I'll go look at DVDs and CDs.
  21. On the way out, time to (finally) succumb to the Dark Side and look at the sale books. It's dead easy to "It's only seven bucks!" myself into a c-note, it's scary.
  22. Oooh! Art books!
  23. Finish out the sale books... Glance toward the weird sierra club charms and crystals crap in that section I never go into.
  24. Fine... Here's all my money. And my left hand. And a contract for the life of my first-born child. See you next week.
  25. I'm free!
So, yeah. I've got major tunnel vision in book stores, because I don't usually make it to the comics. ;-)

Oh... And, I didn't mean to say "Ghastly should seek a book deal with a major publisher, to the exclusion of other possibilities." They's almost certainly have to start out self published. Nothing wrong with that. Done right, and marketed properly, I think they'd sell pretty wildly.

Your doing better than me. Half the time the Lure of the Dark Side is too strong. Or if I'm making a pilgrimmage to Powell's, which has to be seen to be believed, it's the "Staff Picks" room in the front.

Damned Powells and its irresistableness. Fortunatly, I live out in Gresham, so it's easy to avoid the temptation, but any time I'm in that part of town I feel this irressitable urge to go in Powells, knock all the books off a shelf, and just role in a huge pile of brain candy.

I picked up a decent How-To-Self-Publish book while toying with the idea of a "con cosplay yearbook" (pro photos at a con, compiled into a book, presold at said con.) I've basically given up on the idea (much to the chagrin of one of my friends, who offered start up capital) in favor of Anime Airlines (which is currently on hold because I couldn't get financing for my flight school :() because, quite frankly, flying scares me less then copyright and trademark attourneys.
