When I first saw this thread, my impression of it was that we were supposed to create original animated gifs... So that's what I'm doing.

Im headed to bed so I will look at the answer in the morn, but is this war limited to one round or not ? Animated GIFs are an ongoing passion of mine for almost 6 years now and I have a fairly good collection and of all the places I wouldnt mind sharing the goods it is Ghastly's. (I was mortified when my last hard drive died on me ... lost many many many good GIFs I havent been able to replace).

Animated gifs are WAY older than flash. I make them with Animation Shop. That comes with Paint Shop Pro, or used to at least.

As you've seen already, everybody has their own favorite tools.

Yes, you absolutely can create an animated GIF with Flash. No you can't make one with Photoshop without other tools added on... I think ImageReady makes it possible now, but don't quote me on that... I'm not posetive. You can also make them with Fireworks and (I think)

There's also shareware and cheapware solutions that obviously predate flash. Aside form the ones mentioned above, I like the old GIF Construction Kit from Alchemy Mindworks, but I liked it a lot better when it was free.

My hands down favorite tool for creating animated GIFs is Corel PhotoPaint. There are actually a lot of things about this less expensive application that are way better than PhotoSlop... It's ability to create full AVI, MPG, and GIF89a images is just one of them.

Here's one I didn't make, but I love it...

And finally, one I did as part of a study for another image for a client. This one used an initial animation from Poser.
