Sucky Real Media film of an octopus in a tank full of sharks in the Seattle aquarium. Kind of surprising.

SPOILER!!!!

They put a Giant Pacific Octopus in a larger tank that had a sharks in it and hoped that the octopus' strength and camoflogue would keep it alive. Pretty soon shark fragments started showing up floating around. They wondered where the exhibit was going and posted an observer. The clip shows the octopus ambushing a shark, wrapping it in its arms and killing it.

i've been having a hell of a time trying to get to the PBS domain.. none of my local DNS servers have fresh records for some reason... hummm..

Anyway, yea.. for any given size, an octopus can kick about 10-12 times its mass in ass*. Squid are pretty damn good hunters too.

*this is of course a highly scientific term taking all kinds of factors in to account, but strangely, not whether or not the animal in question has an ass.

That's the coolest thing I've seen since Einstein.

The squid has a decided advantage over the shark; sharks need to move constantly, if only a little, to be able to breathe. A squid can sit still. Hold a shark still long enough, and it'll just choke ...

I like how stealthy the octopus is before the strike. Very interesting video (and scary and disturbing to boot!)

MRUAHAHAHAHA!

In the wild, there is nothing like watching an octopus stalk its prey. They do the neatest things, like drop in to holes and extend their eyes on this thick stalk, take a quick look around, creep up disguised as a rock, and then POUNCE!

Actually, the part that George and I thought was funniest was watching the octopus drag the carcass away afterwards. "If I hide it, maybe the humans won't notice..."
