I fucking hate Microsoft.

Post by Ghastly »

Just a the other day my computer started acting up. I can be browsing with IE and can get anywhere I need to be going on the internet and I'm obviously connected but when I load Outlook Express and try to access a newsgroup it tells me that I'm connected and gives me the option of trying to connect again or working offline. If I click try again it works and I can access the newsgroup.

Until a few days ago I was also able to play MPEG and AVI and other media files online with Windows Media Player. Now if I click on a MPEG on a webpage WMP tells me it can't play the file because I'm not connected top the internet, dispite the fact that I clearly am. It won't play the damn file. It plays offline files fine enough but won't play anything online. This just started happening a couple of days ago.

I've re-installed all the latest software. Set everything to default settings. No matter what I do these two problems seem to percist.

Anyone know what's wrong and what I can do to fix it?

Depending on what version of Windows you have, there should be an Internet control panel. Look in the tabs and set the "Never dial a connection" option or whatever's closest. If you are using a dialup connection, make sure your connection's settings are in order. If you don't use dialup, remove dialup networking if you don't think you'll need it.

Hey Ghastly, did you check your firewall - if your using zone alarm or something like that you might have accidently denied windows media player access to the internet. I've done that a few times...

Nope. There's no dial-up connection even available and the problem is still there with the firewall completely eliminated. Infact now the "work offline or try again" problem is showing up while I'm surfing in explorer, but at least if I hit "try again" everything works fine.

Hmm. What sort of connection do you have.
Make sure:

Your cable modem/xDSL modem is connected correctly
Check that the network settings are what your ISP reccomends.
In the Internet Properties Control panel, Make sure you have the proper connection selected, it could be that your PC tries one connection then the next.
Make sure you haven't activated a proxy server by mistake.
Do some diagnostics on your ethernet card/connection.
Check for Virii.
Check for Spyware.
Try Mozilla or another browser. If everything's messed up it's your connection, if Mozilla et. al work fine it's some of that microsoft junk making problems.
If that doesn't work, identify when things started acting screwy and use system restore to go back to an earlier date. Windows 98SE and up should have the function.

Well I seem to have fixed it. Don't know what the problem was exactly.

Re-installed windows.

Didn't work.

Re-installed access manager.

Didn't work.

Uninstalled damn near everything and re-installed it again.

Didn't work.

Kept fucking around.

Got it to work.

God I fucking hate windows.

I can smell a reformat coming!

But at least you'll get that warm bubbly feeling that comes with working on a freshly formatted computer - (not unlike the warm bubbly feeling that comes with fucking a virgin)

Yeah I think so. I'm just glad I've got two hard drives in the machines so I can move data files, etc, from one to the other before formating.

Okay how do I completely kill off Windows Media Player. I uninstalled WMP v7.1 but now it's little bitch sister WMP v2.0 has taken over the task (and miserably at that).

I've got ATI media player playing all the offline media by default but I can't seem to get it to play the online stuff.

Unistalling and re-installing swomething generally dosn't work, because whatever bad setting you have, will stay saved in the registry and will be reincarnated when you install the aplication back. Youll have to looks in the registry and find the problems, but I don't recommend mesing with the registry unless you know what you are doing.

There is a nice porgram that allows you to uninstall all traces of a program or good. It also finds and delete the aplications that starts automaticaly when you start windows (which are responsible fro about 80 percent of all computer problems in my experience)

I hope the programs is usefull to you... (It allows you to have backupt of any changes in the registry, to restore from any accidental screwup)

Downloaded the program.

Don't have clue #1 what anything does in it.

I miss my Atari.
