Exactly my point. We started off with "horseless carriage" and "automobile" and, when the thing grew common enough, adapted an older word and eventually went with "car". "Telepathy" is just as awkward a word as "automobile", and would likely be discarded in favour of something simpler. Cordwainer Smith uses "spieking" as an adaptation of an earlier word, much like "car" from "cart", but there are dozens of options.
