if you could be a monster
I was looking through some of my World of Darkness books and i thought of this question. If you could be one of the supernatural creatures the game centers around, which one would it be.
Now. my perceptions of these creatures comes largely from my role playing games, but you don't have to play the games to answer the question as i have tried to provide a summary of each of the five types so everyone will be on the same page.
perhaps when everyone picks one, we can have a war or something.
and your choices are:
vampire
- Destroyed by sunlight. Must consume the blood of the living to survive. but immortal save for a few special means of destruction. They have powerful abilities that makes them formidable combatants and masters of manipulation. I expect this one will be rather popular, but remember, the drawbacks are steep.
Werewolf
- Something like Shamans. Werewolves guard the mortal world from the influence of spirits and the like. In addition to their physical prowess and shape shifting they also posses potent magic due to their relationship with spirits.
Mage
- Mages have the power to rework reality as they see fit, at least in theory. Most know a number of specific spells that can accomplish a huge variety of things. And they can improvise with raw magic if they don't have the right spell for the job. They have the most versatility in their abilities, but they are by and large still humans with all the human weaknesses. Also it is difficult and dangerous to work magic around non magic folk.
Promethean
- Prometheans are creations made of flesh, in the tradition of Frankenstein's monster. Shunned and hated by all but their own kind. The very presence of a Promethean warps the landscapes and causes people to lash out at them with rage. But still, Prometheans have quite a few useful abilities and are almost impossible to kill.
Changeling
- Changelings are people who were captured and changed by the fey into something not quite human. They gain power from emotions and travel though dreams, many also have powers over aspects of nature.

I went with mage. It's closest to my actual personality, I think, since it seems to involve a fair amount of scholarship in most mythologies.

Changelings are fun, tho I forgot at first they aren't the same as shapeshifters. I'd like to shapeshift...

If I was anything in the world of darkness:
(I am assuming the old WoD.)
I would be some sort of Technocrat firstly (Syndicate, followed by Void Engineers, followed by Progenitors, followed by NWO, followed by ItX).
After that, maybe a rogue Euthanatos or rogue Etherite.
After that, a Tzimisce.
After that, a Setite, followed by a Giovanni (I have a thing for relatives).
Edit: actually, being the CEO of a Pentex subsidiary would be good. Then I'd be a weaver drone.
After that, a Weaver drone.
Finally, a fomor.
(Is there anybody on this forum that knows what ALL of the above things are?)

i've heard a lot of people say that about PtC. But i've also heard that since the CAN become human in the end that it is one of the most saddest/positive games ever.kingofthemorlocks wrote:Reading through the Promethean book made me die a little on the inside...though at least it's not as shitacular as Wraith: The Wrist-Slitting Cryfest, in which there is an actual "Angst" stat.
but personally i'm not interested in it.
i was thinking nWoD but if you want to kick it old school thats cool too. so, where do you keep your katana?Vedius Pollio wrote:If I was anything in the world of darkness:

Ok, in old mage, the technocracy are a group of mages who are unaware that they are mages and think that they're scientists. They are dedicated to destroying all superstition and supernatural creatures.Vedius Pollio wrote:If I was anything in the world of darkness:

*The Syndicate are one of the technocracy conventions and practice magic within the paradigm of economics, along with the usual high tech weapons (their magic is very charisma-based, and they also enjoy manipulating other people's luck; if you've ever seen a Spanish film called Intacto, you would understand them easily enough) .
*The Void Engineers explore other dimensions and have spaceships.
*The Progenitors are doctors/biologists have clones (as well as a drug dealer sub-group who can produce magical cocaine).
* The NWO are men in black. Their powers are fairly similar to Syndicate ones. (Like the syndicate, their focus is mind).
* Iteration X are robot specialists and cyborgs.
*Euthanatos are assassin mages, while Etherites are breakaway technocrats who believe in pseudoscience instead of rationalism (and have wacky technology).
* Tzimisce are shape-shifting vampires who have the power to control flesh (changing shape, growing organic weapons, changing other people's bodies). They are the most sadistic vampires and are obsessed with abandoning their human shape. (the more human Tzimisce are just trannies.)
*Setites are Egyptian vampires who believe in spreading corruption. The typical setite is into drugs and slave trading.
* Giovanni are incestuous necromancer vampires.
* Pentex is a company that is controlled by an evil force called the Wyrm. It secretly plots to spread corruption, hatred, disease, and environmental degradation. (Think all of the Captain Planet villains, plus that annoying boss guy from Office Space.) It has a gazillion subsidiaries including a big oil company (Endron), a drug company (Magadon), a military weapons contractor (Nastrum), a gun manufacturer (Herculean), an alcohol manufacturer (King Beer, whose logo looks very similar to Crown Lager), a company that makes video games that inspire violence (Tellus). It is staffed by a lot of supernatural creatures: evil werewolves, vampires, fomori, bad mages.
* Weaver drones are possessed humans. They rapidly regenerate and have an affinity with electronic devices and technology. (Also, they do not need to defecate, have periods, eat, or sleep. They lack any sex drive, and generally aren't very creative. Almost all of them have an extreme form of OCD.) This is because they're possessed by the Weaver, the incarnation of all of the order and stability in the universe.
* Fomori are possessed by the Wyrm (the spirit of decay and corruption). Unlike weaver drones, they are generally not orderly or normal looking (though some can pass as human). (There are also fomori called normalites, who are former homosexuals who have undergone Pentex-funded anti-gay treatment. They lose their genitals and eyes, and turn into asexual, hairless, creatures.) All of them are repulsive in some way (either mentally or physically) though there exist fomori called enticers which are seductive and good as decoys. Because of the Wyrm possessing them, they don't usually last long, because the Wyrm's power is inherently degenerative (either mentally or physically).
I'm ashamed that I can remember all of this.

Fun Fact: In certain lore, a succubus who had taken in enough semen from evil men would eventually turn into an incubus and deliver that semen to corrupted women, ensuring that they would deliver bastard children, eventually turning back when the well ran dry, as it were.
I had to choose changling, though I'm not as familiar with those books. I was torn between werewolf and changling for my choice, but I know I don't really fit the mould of what a furball would be to actually be a good werewolf. Just my luck I'd be the prat that get's taken out by the fucking goonies shooting silver-covered marbles from a slingshot or something.

If their going by the Vampire rpgs, then it wouldn't matter since the purity of the silver involved would need to be much higher than the average store bought brand. I like the werewolves because, apparently, they can kick the ever loving shit out of vampires.
Personally I never got into any of that VtM crap, but I always felt the Frankenstein monster book was just a prime example of jumping the shark. Much like the diarrhetic mess that was the Psychic Handbook for AD&D.

Werewolf or vampire in that order.
Both (if memory serves) are clinically immortal meaning they can take their time with life and not worry about running out of time to do the things they want to do in it. Both are capable of surviving serious accidents like car wrecks, getting randomly gunned down by a mugger, or the like. Both have needs and weaknesses that can be addressed/overcome without too much trouble. Both are pretty tough if they need to smack someone down. Both are capable of blending in with the "norms." Shapeshifting is awesome, but in lieu of that, mental manipulation is not a bad runner-up.
After those, being a mage gives the most versatile abilities but it is a whole lot easier to get killed, and you probably won't have an answer to "I am getting old and going to die," short of Altered Carbon. More important, I prefer "I am deathless" to the Altered Carbon methodology.
Promethian I know little about, but the whole "everything hates you because you're an aberration/construct/monster" thing is irritating.
As for Changeling. I don't do "fey" unless they're capable of adapting as history marches on. I do not believe they are in the WoD setting. Maybe if I could become the hentai fairy or a code gremlin, but even then, I also don't usually feel like being tiny and hidden.

in nWoD no one seems to know what the lifespan of a werewolf is because they rarely live long enough to find out due to their very violent lifestyles. But i know underworld had immortal werewolves, so it isn't like the idea is unheard of.boring 7 wrote:Werewolf or vampire in that order.

well, some mages choose to make themselves immortal by sucking the life force out of others. As long as you keep doing it, you can extend your life indefinitely. it is evil to be sure but it isn't much different than what vampires do, you just have to do it once every few years.
Changlings are the newest addition to nWoD. it is a very dark game about people who were kidnapped by god like THINGS from another dimension who get away from their captors and return to Earth only to find that they are not human anymore because of the ways their fey captors/lovers/tortures changed them. No playful sprites here.
