Episode 43

Postby Lordgeejay on Sun Dec 02, 2001 3:47 am

Yes it did took me a while to finish. I didn't anticipate that it was going to take me a long time. The most unexpected thing was that the software is taking a long time to save and that ate away at the time.
The bird is sorta important but not very. It is significant though. I hope I did a passable crow. I haven't drawn a crow before and I don't have a handy reference.
Thanks for posting.
------------------

*drool*
That must have taken you forever. I draw really bad and it still takes me a LONG time to color anything I scan. Ooo...that crow was given a lot of footage for a bird, so he must be signifigant. Nevermore!
Are you going to be coloring any more pages in the future? It must be hard work, but boy is it pretty...

No fair having the advantage of knowing what color everything is supposed to be!
Heh, actually, nice job. How long did it take you? The page I sent you for fan-artwork took me about 4 hours total using Adobe Photoshop 5.5. Your piece looks alot cleaner too, but I hear alot of people say using a pad really helps with that.

Hi Ben and Watchman,
Ben,
Nice to hear from you again! Yes I have the advantage of knowing how the colors of their costume. Sorry about that.
The page took me approximately 3 hours to do in Photoshop 6. A lot of that 3 hours is waiting for Photoshop to finish saving my changes. I save often when I work, you see. Just in case something wrong happens lika power outage or Win98 suddently decides to crash. It was my first try and so I didn't expect to encounter the problems I had. I know better next time though.
The tablet helped a bit. But since I just bought it, I was still not very used to it. I think I would have finished it faster using the mouse. But who really knows now, right?
Watchman,
Uhm, like I said in the blog I think, I did the bird without reference and uhm, yeah, so that's why I made a mistake with the anatomy. Hehehe. Anyway, thanks for pointing it out.
Actually, if you take at the image again, I fixed the number of toes the bird has based on your comment. Of course the fourth toe is not visible behind the leg.

Wow, episode 43 looks awesome. Even without color it would've been exceptional, but with color it really looks beautiful. ^___^
what dpi were you working with when you colored it? I always scan in at 300 or 150 dpi, but then color only in the targeted resolution of the image to save time in the load/save arena.
Looks great though - btw - are you still planning to set up your own forum? That avatar you drew of your fiancee (Rox?) looks pretty cute! When's the big day?
------------------

Hi Henry.
Thanks for the compliment. This coloring style (cell-type) is what I've been working on recently (as you can see from my recent colored pieces). After I master this one, I may move on to a more complicated coloring style. I feel my ink work is improving already so why not try to improve on the coloring as well?
Also, I'll be changing the look of the site real soon (more graphical and colorful). I already made the new banners colorful to start with (my guinea pig work) and now, a full colored page. I was planning on doing the 1st page of chapter 3 as the first full color page but I thought, what the hell, might as well start now because this page is easier to color. The next page will require me to draw and color fire. So that may not come out as nice as this one. Gulp.
I scan at 300 dpi always. Your technique of coloring the shrunk version is actually a good idea. I should do that too. Hmm... Yeah it was hell for Photoshop trying to save my work each time I wanted it to. What I did with this one is color everything in the original scale then when everything is done, I flatter the layers and save it as another PSD file but this is the one where I put the dialog balloons. Still slow but manageable.
Yes, I'm still planning on setting up my own forum. I don't like the EZBoard one. Too much ads for my taste. And thanks for the compliment on the avatar image. She's not actually going to use that image. I had a smaller image without the forest background that she'll be using.
Big day? You mean marriage? Uhm, soon.

------------------

Whee, now it's not a mutant anymore! Must've been a pain editing it.
In the case you need to draw it in the future, though, I dug up some reference material for you. Hope it helps.

Hey Watchman.
Yeah. No longer the mutant bird. Actually, I was able to modify it quite easily. I had lots of practice in modifying images so this particular one wasn't difficult at all. Thanks again for pointing it out.
------------------
