I noticed your little Editorial under your <a href="http://www.barclay-usa.org/d/20000503.html">April Third Comic</a>. and to reply...
I am not a gun toting redneck by any stretch of the imagination, but within our household resides a Taurus .357 Caliber 7-Shot revolver. We keep it for protection. And since it is fairly new, it does have a trigger lock on it. And this, like most trigger locks, is nothing that can be released quickly in the heat of the moment, for it takes up to 30 seconds when all my concentration is focused upon it. holy cripes! howdy CovertKn. hey this is a first, someone other than me posting in the Barclay forum. anyhow, back on topic. if i had the cash money i myself would by a pistol. i've got no problems with owning handguns. now assault rifles, sub-machine guns, C-4 and bazookas, those are another matter. i don't know where you live Covert, but in Central Florida there are what seems to be a ridiculous number of accidental shootings by children who've gotten into their parents gun drawer/closet/safe etc... why is that? because parents give themselves too much credit for being ingenious at hiding things. hey, i'm sorry to break it to them... but kids wrote the book on hiding and seeking things. when i was a kid i knew were every single present was and where my parents kept the mad money stash. of course, they were clueless to my knowing because as i said, parents just don't give kids anough credit. i'd rather require gun locks than licensing. although licensing doesnt seem so bad... after all we have to be licensed to drive, to fly or to practice medicine- all of which are activities that are not designed to kill, although death can be a sad result of said activites. yet, for the most part, a license to own a gun isnt a requirement (if i'm not mistaken, if i am, by all means correct me).why is this? a gun is not a tool. nothing useful can come from a gun. it was designed as a weapon to kill and to maim. (well, unless you're home simpson and use a g un to open soda or beer cans <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/wink.gif">.) back to gun locks...
sure, you could always keep it unloaded, but then when you're in trouble you need to find the bullets and load it properly. of course, children are masters finding things so this brings us back to square one. the only solution i can reasonably see to functioning with a gun lock (as you stated it takes you several minutes to unfasten the lock) is to practice practice practice. shit, if a marine can strip apart and put together an M-16 in a matter of minutes then i'm sure with a little practice you could unlock the trigger in a matter of 30 secs to a minute or even less. that's just my point of view Covert. i'm not expecting to change yours, just to try and enlighten you as to why i think the way i do. most of us in life will have differing viewpoints on very heated subjects and if we didn't there'd be no way to ascertain the bets possible compromise. with dissention (sp?) comes alternatives. well, i've said my piece... run with it if you'd like to reply. if not, have a great weekend!<P>------------------
