What's your favourite scary movie?
Oh the horror...
Finland has always had a lively gorehound community, mostly thanks to some archaic censorship laws that tried to ban the movies they ended up making popular. (Those laws were revoked some time back, finally.)
I became a part of this community at 12 I think, and havn't looked back since. You come to appreciate movies a whole lot more when you have to get them via trade, and by buying them as shoddy copies from the Netherlands, with Greek subtitles.
Some countries, like Germany and the UK, are still getting the dodgy end of the stick in this regard, which now effects how some R2 DVD's are censored, but I'll rant about that later.
Now as for my fave horrorflicks, I'll have to go with the classics...
Alien: A quaranteed fright, even after you've seen it about twenty times. Remains unbeaten when it comes to the 'creepy things in spaceships' category, and has not been matched by any of its sequels. Aliens was a hell of a lot of fun, yes, and Alien 3 had the same bleakness to it as the original, but 4 was just a travesty, plain and simple.
Romero's 'Dead-series': Night, Dawn, Day - it doesn't really get any better than this in the genre of zombies walking the Earth. Yes, there are the Italian masterpieces, but their brand of terror is more surreal, while Romero grounds his trilogy in the real world, bringing it all closer to home. Also, I won't ignore the Return of the Living Dead I & II, but those were more comedy than anything else. This is what Resident Evil tried to be, know your roots.
Nightmare on Elm Street: What did I say about sequels not making the original's grade? Classic example here, although Wes Craven's New Nightmare did give Freddy new life. Fine frights, will increase your coffee intake.
Halloween I & II: We won't even mention sequels here, there were none, okay? These two I consider one single movie, and they may be one of the most classic slasher flicks around. When it comes to the lone, unstoppable nut with a knife, Michael Myers is it. Also, these flicks brought us Jamie Lee Curtis, what more is there to say?
The Exorcist: Oookay, now this one, especially the new version with the revamped sounds and added footage, can scare me silly every single time. Creepy, creepy, creepy, masterfully directed. One of the strong points here is, once again, that the horror is in our world, in an otherwise mundane setting. Works every time.
Hellraiser I & II: Horror with added style. I have always been a fan of Barker and his works, and I can stare at these two time and time again, just for the visuals, and to hear Pinhead's monologues. Powerful stuff.
Anything and everything by Dario Argento: The Italians have their own brand of horror, one that is usually disturbing at its lightest. Dario Argento has brought us such gems as Opera and Suspiria, to make sure we won't be feeling hungry anytime soon. Also recently, some of his works have been coming out as new, uncut prints. Find them, get them.
There, some classics of horror that I enjoy. Yes, there have been some good movies made since 1995, but not an awful lot. Yes, there's been good action-scares like Pitch Black, amusing bits like Event Horizon, and even some class acts like The Others, but even the classy ones need to age a little first, to prove that they can stand the test of time like their predecessors. And never, ever, believe that a movie based on a video game based on a movie, can make that grade.

Yup that would be the one. It's pretty damned freaky when you are something like 6 years old and are watching it. But hey, I know people who are scared to death of ET.On 2002-04-01 14:38, Youmna wrote:
Mikaiten, are you talking about "The Dark Crystal" with Jim Henson's muppets? That wasn't that scary. . .

point taken but did you even go to see that movie? It really has very little to do with the story of the game. I mean I remember the sceene with the laser room or when the zombes (finally) came out.
Granted it was kind of cheezy at times. But at other times it was very bloody.
Really It was a movie for the fans of the game more than anything else. As for a regular person they (might) say it was ok. But im sure movie critics will eat this movie alive.

I have about three;
1) Army of Darkness, with skeletons, ghouls, gribblies, at least one demonic thing with wings (and a skin condition like the rest of them) and all the chainsaw action you could eat. Man that split my sides watching it and I think I've seen all four alternative endings too...
2) The Sixth Sense; it did have it's scary moments but moreover it had a lot of powerful acting and imagery in it. More made me cry loads than scare me...
3) Dracula; I love anything with that guy in it...
As you may have guessed I don't watch scary movies to be scared...

Poltergeist. I saw it when I was six and it was the first scarey movie I ever saw. The storm scene really stuck in my mind, since we had a scarey old tree in our backyard. I also played in my closet often, which stopped. And I didn't play in the backyard much after seeing coffins rise up and open. Man did that movie totally mindfuck me! I mean it followed my thinking until I was like 8 or 9. It still gives me the chills when I watch it.
I thought Resident Evil was so-so. I loved the game, so the story was a disappointment. The effects were excellent, but I wouldn't go see it again unless it hits the dollar theatre. Romero should've been kept on the job for the movie.
I hear they're making an Alien 5. The bugs reach Earth, so I'm hoping for some good marines vs aliens scenes. Aliens had one thing the others didn't, heavily armed soldiers going into a hostile enviroment and still getting slaughtered. I mean its easy to take out a freighter crew or some prisoners, but highly trained marines? Alien 3 sucked IMO because they tried to recapture the suspense of the first, but you really can't do that. I did like 4, though it was the standard lightly armed guys getting stalked plot. We need and Aliens vs Predator movie dammit >_<
Event Horizon rules, Nuff said.
Anyone seen The Thing? I saw the 80s remake and thought they did an very nice job on the movie. It kept you guessing.

I've seen Event Horizon once on a bad copy and fell asleep.......I must watch it again to see what the fuss is about.
I watched "What dreams may come" earlier tonight.....at last a Robin Williams pic in which the first 30 mins didn't suck....
Interesting flick esp. considering our favourite strip........

Perhaps Resident Evil 2 will be better. I seriously hope they can stick a bit more to the game. Dual action plots, more mutants, the damn police station!
Just a thought, but if someone was slowly walking towards you, didn't look to well, and doesn't seem to respond to injuries...
Wouldn't you assume it to be a zombie and not empty 200rd rounds into it chest?

JUST A WARNING ABOUT A VERY IMPORTATNT SPOILER.
Please don't read this unless you have watched the movie.
I agree that romero should have stayed as the director and should of keept the story the same. If anythig they should use the story of the book rather than the game. I remember reading calabine cove or underground for the first time.
But as for the movie itself unless you have either read the books or played throu some of the games (RE2,3 or Code Veronica) some of the movie wont make very much sense. like at the end when the whole town is deserted or when one doctor said. "Lets put him in the N&^#@$
Program."
Even some of the plot points of the other games might have been solved like who tossed that rocket lancher at leon at the end of RE2. It's like Capcom wrote the script for the movie.
The movie still stays a fair amount away from the games, but it really can fit in the storyline and work.
But like I said before that movie was just basically made for the fans. So it really anyones preference as to who likes it or not .
