Out of curiosity, what happens when some unfortunate bugger in Hell dies? Does he just lie around for a little bit and then get back up? I doubt that whatever rules Hell will let them out of eternal torment that easily. After all, the strip has mentioned people getting killed down there, and some apparently die repeatedly.
------------------

Remember that Drip, Vince and the rest get absolutely no satisfaction from what they do. That is particularly clear in a past Drip strip. They keep the urges that they had in life, but they cannot fulfill them. That is their punishment... And therefore, they are used as tools to punish others, while being punished themselves.
They keep trying to quench their thirst, but that thirst will never be sated, and they will never cease to feel the anguish of not being able to fulfill their desires. And they know it, and they are also unable to stop doing what they do.
I'd say that it is quite a clever way of punishing the "sins"... And I guess that, after somebody else takes their place, they fall back into more "common" punishment... I would say that the memory of their past position of "preeminence" also plays a part in their punishment then
JoseB
------------------

My assumption about the Collisium is Maybe Satan or whoever put it there Cuz if i remember correctly and AWFUL lot of Gods Followers were sent there to die Various ways along wiht Numberous other people. Either that or Dave thought it looked cool so he put it there.. Either one is probably true
Be one with the void.

Heres an interesting hypothesis, might even put things in perspective.
What if:
Jacks favorite saying when alive was, "I'm gonna send your soul to judgement" or, "Heaven or hell, you're about to find out", right before he killed people. Something that equated to him loving to send people to their deaths.
Now that he's dead, he literally has to take them to judgement, and it makes him miserable. His ultimate punishment is to carry out the deed he so loved in life. He now see's how painful it is to take those innocent souls to judgement.. away from the things they cared about.
Argh.. i hate posting at work, I always lose my train of though.. anyway,
zees es sumtink to theenk about...
Brian

As I understand it, you can die, but you are reborn (in Hell still) in about a day.
If I went to Hell I would just kill myself every time I woke up.
Hell is such an impossibility though that thinking about it is done more jokingly than anything else.

Hmm, didn't someone say that Vince kept someone as an immortal showgirl? Perhaps being reborn at intervals is not the "natural" state for hell's resident's; perhaps that only comes as part of their punishment/ruling Sin's whim.
Another thing: why the coluseum? why should the damned be so captivated by death and punishment, especially the sins? Drip has to realize that's he's doing time in hell precisely because of this stuff, yet he hasn't seemed to learn anything from it. If hell isn't punishment enough, what's the point?

Maybe not everyone deserves eternal punishment. If you're only a little bad, you get no powers and are quickly destroyed, and your suffering is over. If you're middling bad, you'll attract the attention of someone powerful and they'll make you an immortal but lowly servant. And if you're *really* bad, you get all these powers to keep you 'alive' so that you suffer continuously forever *and* help torture others.
Or maybe not. }:P
Maybe if no one brings you back, you regenerate in 1000 years? I saw that somewhere (but not in this comic).

Erm. I really don't think that a catchphrase in life is necessary for Jack's job to be punishment.
JoseB has a cool idea, what if the Sins do in hell what they did in life (sorta) for all eternity. Bob and Lisa ate, so they spend Hell eating sulpher-tasting meat that never fills them up. Drip raped, now he lusts. Jack was a killer, now he tends to the dead. Vince had a religion, now he has a religion. With any luck, this is supposed to make them realize how twisted their lives were. It worked for Jack, but the others seem to embrace their warped natures.
I of course am destined to become Sloth and spend all eternity posting mindless e-mails on a forum. : )
