Having the Sight of Souls, as Cotton does, means having the ability to see directly into someone's soul. The very truth of their being is exposed, their true thoughts, the underlying layer to what they are thinking is exposed.
They're naked, so to speak, which is why Albert Temple (artist of Gene Catlow - does anyone know if he writes it, too?) and by extension, David, both draw everyone naked when the Sight of Souls is "turned on." Everything is laid bare.Edit: Oh yeah. . . I think the reason Cotton and Gene can both see Vince is because he's just a soul, with no physical body.
AND, last addendum: Cotton is the only one, I think, who actually has the ability to turn the Sight of Souls on and off. Gene is just along for the ride. I think it works like a sort of tent, or something of the sort: there's a radius in which the Sight works, and the person who controls it is as the center of the circle created.
