I didn't think it was the "gay" facet that was scaring Pierce, I thought it was the "making out in your room underage" facet that had him worried. Or the "if Mom finds out, we're going to get the 'Life cycle of a venereal disease' multi-media presentation again" facet.

LOL, exactly what I was thinking

Yay for being a parent, and yet somehow still being Volair. Kudos, Allen.

Am I the only one who thinks they're not going to be deterred for so long as Pierce is suggesting? (Alex sure seems to be recovering quite frankly from the initial shock that, it seems, was due to his BF's dad's frankness. And, well, even leaving aside the "beefcake-slash-bodyguard" factor, they do seem to get along well enough that Pierce's "damn good reason" might not take long to arrive.)

(Discreetly, by the way.)

Also, I seriously WISH I'd had a parent like Volair. Taboos about sex have never really sat well with me - and it seems that in the days of UH2, Volair isn't going QUITE so far out of his way to shock people as before, either. (Though I wouldn't doubt he might occasionally find it fun to tease prudes now and then?)

When I was drawing this comic I actually laughed out loud at Alex's expression on panel 3.

Yeah, I laugh at my own comics. Actually that's half the reason I do it.

I read that as "Princess. I love it." Somehow it fit.

Possibly. I certainly have quite a different perception.

Thinking about this:
allan_ecker wrote:When I was drawing this comic I actually laughed out loud at Alex's expression on panel 3.

...Alex's expression is a combination of shocked, mortified, and squicked.

Which is exactly how I've found most people react to talking about sex with their parents, expecially their own sex-lives.

Seriously --- by making sex forbidden, most parents are guaranteeing that their teens will find sex tempting. Forbidden-fruit and all. Even a teenager who wasn't squicked by talking to his parents about his sex life would find it extremely annoying to be nagged thusly by an overly-open parent: "Now, did you two remember to play safe? And the condom didn't break or fall off? Now remember, you both don't have to orgasm at the same time. It's okay if ... oh, I told you that already? Good. And I hope you're not just, 'paying attention to yourself.' I didn't raise you to be rude in day-to-day interactions; you'd better not be rude in bed..."

It will work better than a cold shower.
{And I'm not just spouting theory here. I've seen (directly or indirectly) various degrees of this approach in action with those that I know.}

BTW, Allan, I found the entire strip not only accurate and appropriate, but flat-out hillarious. The only thing that I found missing from Volair's little speech was a sentence about the appropriate use of lube. ("Guys need to use plenty of lube. When you think you've put on too much lube, then you probably almost have enough. Don't skimp on it. And to prevent you getting any ideas about 'economizing' ....") But, maybe you're saving a speech like that from Volair (on proper use of lube) until Pierce and Alex get over their shock.

My parents weren't that open, but they were pretty open about a lot of things... they encouraged protection, probably would have helped us acquire it, etc. but their openness had an approximate effect to that has occured here. The big S-E-X was... partially demystified?

...Particularly, I think, if its your mother doing it.

Hm. Volair sure has changed, hasn't he? Times past I'd have thought he'd be among the last people to discourage such experimentation.

I suppose there's the argument that he's made his mistakes and doesn't want Pierce to make the same ones... but that kinda requires, on some level, viewing sex as (more or less inherently) a mistake.

I think it is more a parent's instinct to try and caution their children against sexual misconduct. As well, it probably is just as bad for parents to think about their kids having sex as the other way around. Note Saundra's expression previous. And Volair did not tell them NOT to. In fact, if anything, he made it easier. He just expressed concern that they would do it appropriately and protect themselves. Over all...Volar is a super dad. Way to go Volair!

...But his stated intent(by that "Mission Accomplished" remark) was in fact to discourage it. Granted, the fact that he's got the supplies right there rather implies that he'd follow through if they did... but...

Odd situation, though definitely an entertaining one.

My point exactly. He does not exactly want Pierce out there having sex. BUT...more so, he wants Pierce to be safe whatever choice the vulp makes.
