It doesn't seem right to me. There's this wonderful scene, followed up by two strips that defeat the effect of it fully. This could have appeared earlier and left the ending clean without a non-linear joke coming in to it, then the final strip would have made an alright ending. Not the best, I have to say because something about it doesn't seem right to me, but still, it would have been better.
Eh, never mind. It'll do.

Eh, the pacing sucks.
That's the worst problem, but the other big one is that I didn't tell enough of the story.
As you say, though, it'll do.
For now. We ARE coming back to this story. But it will be quite a while.
For the time being, I'm kind of weary of this set of stories. Once I've recharged my innocuous sit-com genre batteries, and once I'm in a situation where I can do a twice or three times a week, Umlaut House just might come back.
But hopefully my oddball sense of humor will be fun enough with Unit Zero and the comics to follow that the clumsiness of the finale here won't be -too- much of a disappointment.

The pacing doesn't suck to me.. I feel that the last strip is a kinda tack on to give a bit of closure to the whole Saundra/Volair thing.. like, an assurance that those two are "happily ever after" after the whole thing with Jake and Rick. It accomplishes for them what the vow scene did for Rick and Jake, y'know?
It would have been nice if there had been a few more interim strips to show some of the more unusual, unspoken parts of Rick and Jake's history... introduce a few one shot characters that played a part in making our protagonists where they were.. Of course, it'd be nice if the comic never ended, too, so.. It's as good an ending as one can ask for, since the end can never be perfect.
And, oh yeah. Awwwwwwwww. ^_^

I'm afraid I have to agree, seemed that it peaked in greatness, and then there were 2 other strips just because there were.Hat-Kun wrote:It doesn't seem right to me. But we don't need the perfect ending when we know that ultimately this isn't an ending, it's not time for happily ever after, I'm sure marriage will be the start of a new adventure for everyone who got married, especially Volair.
Anyway...

Well, the last two strips were nice, but rather non-sequiter-ific.
Who's Uncle Frank? Is there a reference from another part of the series that I'm supposed to remember here? If not, can we have some backstory?
As for the last strip... Allan, how does it connect with the rest? When's it happen? What's the context? I'm sooooo confoooooozed!

Uh...
Okay, yeah, some explanations of my horrible pacing are in order.
(This is pretty embarassing, but I'm basically calling this a last-inning Seinfeldian shark-jump.)
The Uncle Frank Problem: I really liked this strip and wanted to have it in there, but it really is a non-sequitor and needed some backup. It works like this: because you can't -hear- the people in comics talk, the viewer assumes this new character to be female. With the verbal abuse, we assume homophobia. With the caterer line, and Rick's identifying the character as Uncle Frank, the thing -should- snap shut, reversing the implication of homophobia and introducing Rick's dragqueen uncle Frank (named after a certain Rocky Horror lead). This didn't work nearly as well as I hoped, and the placement of this strip -really- drags down the quality of the work here.
The Last Strip: I needed, very badly, to have a comic showing that Volair and Saundra had achieved closure and put their relationship on the "right track" towards Good Old Boring Monogamy. I also thought it would be cute to end with this little scene showing the two sneaking off after the wedding for a quiet cuddle in the surrounding forest. It's cute, and if you already know my timetable of events, it works. But the biggest problem with the finale, in the end, was that my audience didn't have a copy of my timetable. Hopefully, my pacing in future will be better, but for now I'm afraid the whole thing is just going to have to sit "as is".
The pacing is, all in all, bad enough to really confuse a few people. It's just a function of my writing these in such a hodgepodge way and really indicates how strained my ability to write Umlaut House has gotten. It's going to be a while before I can come back. But I am coming back. Just.. give me a while away from it. I need to basically come back, deconstruct the comic, and then reconstruct it from the floor up. The next Umlaut House comic may very well start the chronology over again, kind of like Ultimate X-Men or any of a number of Superman universes.
Sorry about all the confusion; if there are any other specific questions, or if I failed to answer some here, please do ask them; the UHCD should have a satisfactory explanation that allows the reader to enjoy the finale, even if the finale still has pacing problems.

It can't be over!!!
NOOO!!!! It can't be over!! There is still so much more story to tell!!
How does Saundra discover that her high speed toaster is really a time machine? What happens the first time she uses it?
When will we see the truely mushy stuff between Saundra and Volair? My imagination is still running wild over the March 19, 2004 comic
Okay, in all honesty, I applaud Allan for realizing he was running out of story to tell and bringing the strip to a satisfying ending point. Few artists bring things to a close when they decide it is time for the strip to end. I would have loved to have seen more of the wedding and guests, but such is life. We got a taste of what happend, even meeting a new character or two (cheers for Uncle Frank! And damn him for having such a great figure!
)
All in all, I am sad to see Umlaut House ending, but I am happy the way is completed it's run. I look forwards to reading Unit Zero!

When you say "right track", whose point of view is that meant from? I don't know, I think that scentence could be read in different ways.Allan wrote:The Last Strip: I needed, very badly, to have a comic showing that Volair and Saundra had achieved closure and put their relationship on the "right track" towards Good Old Boring Monogamy.

Despite the problems, I'm still pretty satisfied with the ending. The Uncle Frank joke is worth keeping--but I'd recommend putting it somewhere before this one on the CD. And maybe in the archives too, if it lets you do that.
And the very last comic, in addition to being ever-so-adorable, is good right where it is. I mean, we need some sort of closure there, since (in my opinion at least) the comic was as much about Volair and his relationship with Saundra as anything else. It's a jump chronologically from the vows scene, but at least the background lets us know that it's a different time and place. This was more of a problem earlier in the comic--with zero backgrounds and a lack of clues in the dialogue, I was sometimes confused when new story arcs began. I remember that for a couple weeks after the Pierce/Rhonda story I was uncertain as to whether or not they had actually gone home yet. >.>
Oh, and for the record, I didn't read Frank as "homophobic female relative" but "bitter ex-girlfriend." (It didn't dawn on me until much later--just now, actually--why that didn't work. >.> ) In my defense: since it's hard to portray the age of furries, I assumed that Rick and Frank were the same age. And at no point had I gotten the impression that anyone in the comic really had an actual problem with homosexuality. Every time Allan led us to believe that someone was homophobic, it turned out to be untrue. Someone storms out of Umlaut House shouting something about deviants, but it turns out Saundra just left her tools lying around in plain view. Jake panics about introducing his parents to Rick, but after his father gets over his initial shock (which was more about the disembodied head to begin with), Jake's dad immediately confesses that he thought he was gay once and makes a joke about Rick and Jake having sex. Volair makes people uncomfortable not because he's flirting with guys but because he's flirting with them (Cal, say). None of this crossed my mind as I read the Uncle Frank comic, of course, but hopefully it explains why I didn't jump to the conclusion Allan intended.
Still, I'm happy to report that the joke worked just as well under my misconception, if not better.
But anyway, yes. Wonderful comic. Can't wait for the next one. ^^

I actually just thought it was one of his aunts. One of the snooty type of rich relatives who leave you nothing in their will, and think that nothing you do is good enough. Why isn't there caviar? This wine isn't old enough. Etc.
