Untitled-The turmoil and the beauty

Post by TobiasWulfBoi »

I really like the way Gloria draws her characters. The sleek lines and flowing curves add an asthetic element that is both visually pleasing and really cute. Another thing I like is her choice of species for her characters-most furry artists/cartoonists go with the most mainstream-foxes, wolves, tigers and the like. Xe is one of the few times I've seen a weasel depicted, and its well done. I especially like his long, graceful neck and overall sleekness. Twap and Keer are the first time I've seen someone draw a kangaroo rat, and, although I have no basis for comparison in the category of kangaroo rats, I still think Gloria does a great job. She's obviously been practicing a long time to develop her drawing style and it shows.

But good art is only half of what a good comic is made of-without compelling storytelling there is nothing for the art to represent. In this respect I may be a better judge than her drawing, as I myself am a writer. Gloria entertwines serious, continuous storylines with lighter, humorous plotlines. I think the best part of it all is that she avoids making the comic an episodic, which usually leads to flat characters. However, as I sat here this evening reading through the archives (and re-reading too..more on that later) the character developements were noticeable and fitting to the context of the storyline.

All in all, a well rounded comic. Why its not on keenspot I do not know....

Now for a comment or two. I'm sure everyone's familiar with the comic for May 26, 2002. (http://untitled.keenspace.com/d/20020526.html) I know you are, because I went through the forum archives to try and glean a greater understanding of the situation. I also re-read much of the comic archives, again, searching for comprehension.
Even before I read the comic for that day, I knew something was coming. Clues ranged from subtle visual hints to the downright obvious.....
Its touching and tragic at the same time. Wonderful that Xe and Keer are beginning to fully realize their love for one another, tragic because of the akward situation it puts Xe in. They say that when in doubt, follow your heart....but what if your heart pulls you in different directions? The situation itself is not the major problem, instead it is the assumption that a choice has to be made. One can love more than one person, in more than one way. The misunderstanding between Xe and Twap, caused by her cryptic message, does no help to the situation. Now Keer may be on his way to tell Twap about the whole thing, although I believe she knows it on a subconscious level. Whats Xe to do? Could their love triangle manage to stabilize? Or will Xe find himself making a choice? And if he does make a choice, who will he choose? I cannot even further a guess, the odds are too close. Personally I think Keer and Xe belong together, for reasons to lengthy to explain here.

I can barely wait until Gloria returns from the Misha/Twap Clone Adventure to address this situation- the suspense is killing me!

*pokes Gloria with her Stick* Fiend. Verily, if I did not harbor such a great need and longing for knowledge of What Happens Next, I would take up the Stick and thoroughly whack thee.

Stay thy hand, fair Arra. Wickedl temptress Gloria may be, she hast cast a spell upon us. A terrible spell that compels our very souls to quiver in suspense at her Creation. Mock not her power! Thou shalt be dealt a cruel hand by the Wyrd Sisters for meddling in affairs not thy own. And pray you call me by mine one true name, Tobias. I believe thou shalt find that it pleases the tongue most greatly.

Verily, dear Gloria, I bask in your welcomes. To quote a certain prince, "May you eat the hearts of your enemies!" Extra brownie points to whomever can figure out what I'm alluding to!

P.S. I am now equipped with an avatar and a witty signature. Yay! The cuteness of my avatar compels you to cheer!

You can call me Toby if you want, although so many people spell it Tobi. Don't know why....hmmmmmm.
Glad to know two of the most presetigous memebers of the forum posted a reply-its a better reception than I've gotten on others, where people were just plain mean! I can't remember why...I think it had something to do with my blue scarf....

great avatar! did you make it yourself?

mine is just my second attempt at inking. I have a few more under my belt now, and experimenting in shading... after that, colour.

I wish I was that talented! I got it permission to use it from a friend for writing a poem they liked. I'm not one of the artists that draw, my mediums are different. I'm an actor and writer, although you probably wouldn't like my stories as they're really dark. I do, however, generally write lighter poetry, and lots of haikus! If anyone's interested I'll post some. Here's a teaser:

alright, well everyone has a gift, and it'd be boring if we were all the same :) we have a haiku-only thread running atm, and to keep Joe from running you over with his skateboard out here , a few more would certainly be welcome in there. :)

Hey now, I don't run people over with my board, thank you. :x I practice what I like to consider "polite" skateboarding. I explained this to Devon once, but I'm too lazy to go into details tonight. Maybe later.

Sorry joe. You were mocking the haiku thread, and so I though it would be better to contain any large outbreak of metered language.

hi!

yes, i'm new, i know, and i figured i might as well post something. i don't read many comic strips, mainly because i don't have much free time, but *somebody* told me that i had to read Untitled!, so I immediately searched for it. the night i found it (a couple of nights ago), I read through 3/4 of the archives in one sitting,( i would've read all of them, but i had to get some sleep before class), and i finished reading the rest about 15 minutes ago. Wow. I usually don't have this strong of a reaction to a comic this early, but I fell in love with Untitled! within the first three strips. I agree with Toby, the characters are very beautifully drawn, and the storylines and dialogue are just amazing. I don't have as much writing experience as Toby, since I draw and paint like a madwoman and very rarely write just to do it, but I absolutely love the strip. I especially love Twap and Snitter, but that might have something to do with the fact that I'm as random as Snitter but, well, a psycho. I also agree with Tobi about Xe, he's adorable! I usually don't like comics as "light" as this one, I tend to read the darker material on the keen. I'd love to write more, but I really need to get some sleep.

ps...i'm cheating here, but... Monty Python!!!! Toby and anyone else who's seen this one knows...

pps...you were right, once again...anymore i should read?

one more....i'll spell it how i want!!!

Don't mind me, I get mood swings sometimes.....its no problem, although this is the first time someone else has had my name...anywhere!
::has accepted the apology already::
sometimes I wish I was born with the name Felix, or wolfram, or Ozymandias..............but nnnoooo, Tobi and I had to be born with extremely similar names. Its creepy...
