Umm - not always. I look at the semi-regular comic things that Kat and Shirlee's friends Gene and CW put on VCL (oh, and by the way, all four of these folks have webcomics of thier own, so if you're new to what's out there, Devilcandy, be sure to look at theirs too - Kat has links to them at the bottom of his main comic page) and Gene seems to be able to extend and retract his barbs. I read once that some scientist tested the "pain" theory by using smooth glass rods. The females reacted the same way as to penetration by a male cat--but then, maybe they were just suprised.

Admittedly, it's a prickly situation when you're pine-ing to pear up with a special someone, trying to cactus with the rest of the romantic world, and not be in a desert of loneliness....
