I was just wondering it this would be an interesting topic.
When was the first time you became really interesting in American Comic Books, and/or Anime/Manga, since I see them as 2 different things to be fans of.
I'll start off.
I originally becamse interesting in comics when, on a trip to B. Dalton Booksellers, I saw the "Return of Superman" tradepaperback. Luckily, I had money saved up and bought the humongous tome. For a while, I would just visit the bookstore and read the trades while I was there and mom was shopping for clothes elsewhere in the mall. When we moved right before high school, I sought out a new place to read comic books in town. That's when I found "Knight Dreams," the best (and only) one-stop shop for anime and comic books in Princeton, NJ. There was still some history to bang out, like my all Marvel period early to my mostly DC tastes now, but that's pretty much where I am now.
Being Asian, I used to watch Chinese subtitled anime when I was a little kid, but it wasn't until I met Scott, the clerk at Knight Dreams, that I really got into anime. As freshmen, me and my group of friends used to have weekend-long Ranma 1/2 binges. One time we watched ALL of the Hakkenden in one sitting. Nowadays, I'm proud 100% otaku. I even converted my roommate, hooking him on Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. I've even made a couple Anime Music Videos, and Scott and I are working on a Parody video right now.
And just to make sure, be sure to visit KNIGHT DREAMS when in the Princeton, New Jersey area!!!
-Fanboy Template

Good topic.
I was first introduced to comics through the Archie Comics title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Adventures. I was a huge fan of the cartoons and movies. At first I only bought them at convienence stores, but eventually sought them out at comic shops and started to slowly but surely get into other titles.
My first real exposure to anime is probably Dragonball. I watched it on a local station for four years till my first year in High School when my gamers club had Anime Fridays and I saw Dragonball in Japanese for the first time, and was first exposed to Neon Genesis Evangelion, my all time favorite anime. And again, I slowly but surely got into other animes.
------------------

Nice topic. Lessee...
I've been exposed to anime for a long time- 1st when i was a kid (age 4-6 or so) and watched horrible imports on tv like voltron, g-force (aka battle of the planets. that confused me to no end) and robotech. then I had a friend growing up who lived down the street who was japanese and i got to watch a lot of raw anime at her house. most of it was real obscure stuff that i barely remember but everyonce in a while go "dude! i've seen that!" and then in 96 I really got reaquanted with anime and called it anime and not japanimation. >.< i started borrowing boots and as soon as i got to college in 98 i was getting fansubs and buying vhs like crazy. now i'm soley dvd except i still love obscure fansub-only series ^^
i think i was 13 when i first ventured from oxford used books downstairs to where oxford comics used to be (before the big book stores brought oxford down and all that survived was the comics and they had to move from their cool old store to the boring new one). i never really bought anything, but i started reading elfquests i borrowed from a friend. but that was about it. other than dabbling with transmetropolitan, i've never really read comic books (I'm sure dennis is crushed). but i do read manga. I started that in 98 as well- buying volumes of Violinist of Hameln online. then i discovered iwase books in atlanta and now am a frequent customer there buying hameln (a shonen-esque series) and lots of different shoujo series.
I don't consider myself an otaku, because I'm not a rabid anime fan and don't try to define myself as an anime fan. Like i tell my dad, i watch anime because it's a good show, not just because its anime. That's not to say i didn't love the utena movie mainly because of the artwork ^^
hmm knight dreams... i think i may have actually been there. I used to spend summers in pennington, NJ. i was just in princeton for thanksgiving.
------------------

Now with more Special Sauce!
It's mighty bold! In fact, it's too bold for human consumption!

OK comics had always been cool to me but I've never been very into comics. The first comic I bought was Groo I think. The oldest comic I still have however is "Harvey Lembeck (sp? I'm not sure about the name) Destroys the Marvel Universe". I really started buying comics when I got to college, and even then it was mainlly Star Wars titles. Now all I get is my monthly Harley Quinn. Of course.... once I get a job.....
Anime is a completely different story and much more complicated. I've watched anime for a long time. I remember several programs from childhood but the only one whose name I know was "The mysterious cities of gold." Of course there was Speed Racer and other popular 80s toons that everyone knows. I heard about "anime" as a phenomenon when Akira came out in 88 (89?) and the local news reported on it being a cartoon "not for children". In Middle School I learned about anime, and not to call it Japan-imation. I never actually saw an anime movie till late High School though. Of course, I don't really count the stuff I saw on the Sci-Fi channel. Again, I took off when I got to college, thanks to the local comic store's rental collection and my friend's collection.
I'm proud to say I know more about anime from personal experience than my nipponphile friend.
------------------

comics:
richie rich when i was like 5 years old, DC Adventure Digests when I was about 8 years old... I first started collecting comics seriously the year after DC's Crisis Crossoverfest, seriously only meaning about a half-dozen titles, since i was never a rich boy... luckily, one of my closest friends spect ALL of his money on comics, and would let me borrow anything and everything he collected!
unfortunately, i haven't been able to collect comics for a while; all i buy now are strip collections -- doonesbury and foxtrot, mostly, and the odd brilliant one-shot graphic novel, when i come across one...
my last collected series included Books Of Magic, Hellblazer, Strangers In Paradise, and Bone...
...
anime:
i first saw Starblazers when it was a weekly show on television in the early 80's; i remember watching that show religiously... voltron, transformers, and mecha-based shows didn't interest me much, tho...
i only really started watching anime this year, tho i DID see some of the "classics" over the years (AKIRA, Vamp Hunter D, BubbleGum Crisis, AD Tank Police, etc.)
i'm still a major anime newbie, but i'm trying to catch up to all you afficionadoes out there..

------------------

Whee, a place to talk about myself!
Well, I was always into comic books, my dad was once and I got into it seriously (i.e. buying them at a comic shop rather than the 7-11) around 7th grade. However, Junior year of HS I realized I was spending about $40 a month on this habit, and that was just too much for me. I quit, cold turkey, around the time Green Lantern was trying to recreate the GL Corps and Superman was past his "I'm lightning!" stage and back to normal.
I've always been into cartoons, since the Nintendo one mentioned above to Super Mario Brothers to Megaman to Voltron to He-Man to GI Joe to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles many, many more. My parents probibly thought I'd grow out of it like my brother did, but I didn't. Cartoon Network is still one of my favorite channels.
Around Freshman year of HS or so I saw Key: The Metal Idol on our local PBS station, apparently the only one to show sub or dub unedited anime in North America. Guess I was just lucky. I watched Tenchi Muyo!, UY, Bubblegum Crisis, and many more there, religiously ever Sunday night. Then around Senior year my friend got me into Anime by his collection, and I started watching more Sub and a wider variety. Freshman year of College (read, October of last year) I got a DVD player for my PC and started buying DVDs. They have now sucked up any amount of money I possibly had, but all of the current Triguns, Cowboy Bebop, Haunted Junction, Princess Mononoke, and Ninja Scroll isn't a bad haul for four months of buying.
Um... oh, and I've been into video games since my old 386 and Wing Commander/ WC2, Doom, Wolfenstein 3d, and others. Sadly, my family upgrades in spurts, so I went from 386 with no CD-ROM drive to a Pentium 250 with a 24x hard drive overnight. Needless to say I missed a lot of video games, but I've made up for, especially with my newly l33t system able to play pretty much any game out tehre at high res, save the newest ones where it needs medium textures. I'm not upgrading just for that damnit.
------------------

You know who was the man in Captain N? Simon Belmont. That guy ruled.
Anyway, on to the subject of comics and anime:
I first comic I really got into was Spiderman. I read quite a few Spiderman comics when I was little, and it was probably my favorite comic, for a time. But then, during the storyline where Spidey was trying to catch Tombstone, I was introduced to The Punisher. He very quickly became my favorite comic character; I just loved the whole thing; the vigilante justice, the guns, the big-ass skull on the shirt... I wanted to be Frank Castle.
As for anime, I watched Voltron during the 80's, but I never really saw any other anime until I saw Vampire Hunter D. Shortly after that I saw Akira and Appleseed. Soon after I started going to an anime club and was introduced to Ranma, Tenchi, etc.
------------------
