"May all salute HER name."
I sense the entrance of the alternate Kath (or will she be "Cath"?). I can't imagine anyone calling an alternate version of Shanna or Alisin "the General."
Of course, at least in Alisin's case, that's based on her personality as shaped by a particular event that may never have taken place in this continuity. I guess I can definitely imagine Alisin(Alison), particularly if she never met Rikk(Rick), demanding that people worship her...
Bushi
Hmm.... I don't think it's Cath. If it was her because she gave in to the power completely, she would hardly stop at the title "General", would she?
------------------

Ooooooooh, you're all wrong!
Devoid of the support of fandom, and facing a hostile, nay, EVIL Father figure, one uber-universe version of the fans we know embraced his feminine side to become the General.
That's right, the General, 'she', is Will!
He has been seen in our familiar version wearing female clothing, we know his father was in the army (Thus the term General to signify Will has outdone his father), and he's got the physical and mental power required of a dictator.
Nodrog "You're just jealous because the voices said they like me best!" Skrap
(If this doesn't win me back the weirdest hypothizer crown, nothing will!)

My money goes with Nodrog on the "General=Will" theory...Kath wouldn't stop at General, Shanna I just can't see as military, and Alisin would be court-martialed her first day in the military ^_^
------------------

What about Rumi!?
Future of this alternate timeline (which, btw, means that they could go even further in the past, almost confirming one of the other possibilities we said be fore), in which She's lost both Rick and Big Red, and the toughest one they got -
To lead...
WHO DO YOU THINK?!
but that's jus' me.

I wish we had a timeline.
What year does this story take place in? It could be present, it could be near-future or near-past.
And the future of the General could be next week, or thirteen generations hence. She need not be anyone we know of, unless someone is very long-lived.
------------------

I have resisted posting here for a long time, but I could not resist pointing out the similarity to the storyline that just passed in a comic called General Protection Fault in which an evil female present character has just found out that a future her has taken over the country and has the ability to travel back in time to knock off her hacker "friends." However, the artist styles are so phenomenally different I can't wrap my mind around the possibility of a cross-over. For the curious, it's on keenspot.com next to CRFH.

I'm going with the Will theory - it's by far the most amusing (though so far this particular universe seems to be particually unfunny).
Oh, and Samwise, I agree; the first thing I though on reading this was instantly 'Trudi!'. Seems unlikely though (although they are currently having a story involving time-travel and so on aren't they. Hmm...)

My guess is the "general" is Will in a dress. That would be the most ridiculous yet fitting possibility. Besides Kath would prefer Queen and Alison would demand to be called master. Of course I could be wrong and it's a demonic Shanna who gained unholy power by watching Star Wars Episode I backwards. Either way I don't know what I am talking about.
I don't usually Nodrogise (he's much better at it than I am, and can draw entertaining conclusions from the slimmest of evidence) but after a week of Phantoms I have an theory - - -
I think we have here a scenario grounded in the "alternate time tracks" idea; see, for instance, Larry Niven's All The Myriad Ways, Fritz Leiber's The Big Time. Respin is from a track where he is part of an authoritarian ruling body (perhaps the eminence grise), and is working his way through the nearby tracks, eliminating them or making them conform to the history he is familiar with (where he's a Big Winner). Or maybe he's a Snake (from Lieber), operating between the time tracks trying to bend them one way or another. He's about done with President Brandon's track; and is coming to the Fans world next - - -
Respins' lines
"A future soon to be the only future"
and
"This world will belong to the General"
are the main triggers behind this train of thought.
I know that Greg is an Alternate History fan from previous conversations on the board, which gives more support to this theory.
Hmmm. I've just noticed the price sticker on my imported, Ace Books copy of The Big Time: 75p, from "Dark They Were & Golden-Eyed", previously the UK's best SF bookshop (It went bust years ago, victim of optimistic financial management: the title now belongs to Forbidden Planet. All In My Own Opinion, of course)
edit: I knew there was another exemplar off this type of story: H. Beam Piper's Paratime Police.
Muttley

Alisin gets my vote. I still subscribe to the theory that this story is Rumy's manga and is an expression of her conscious and subconscious feelings. With Alisin as the General you have the dynamic of Rumy as the hero against Alisin's evil tyrant. You've got the kiss with Rick working on the fantasy romance thing. You also have Alison through her lackey being responsible for Rick being shot. Ultimately I see Rumy being the leader of the rebels who overthrow Alisin the General.
It also strikes me that the apparent goal of the dictator to wipe out imagination rings similar to Thrack's goal way back when. Course Rumy could be using that incident as part of her inspiration, or it may be a theme T likes to explore.
