His dear friend's father was trying to kill her, he wrote in a statement to police, by lacing lemons with sulfuric acid and poisoning pork chops."
[...]
"Investigators, who seized a computer, a rabbit skin and a book of runes from Clara Schwartz's dorm room at James Madison University, are working to decipher a code the suspects used in e-mail, sources said. Heh... The original (TV, I think) movie Monsters and Mazes made me wonder what this interesting game with dungeons was... And to think I though Tom Hanks would only work in credible films...

Oh, jeez...this is just like that V:tM serial killer in the Midwest about five years ago, if I remember correctly...
A college guy somehow convinced his two friends that by killing people and *drinking their blood*, they could and would become VAMPIRES...and he got this straight out of White Wolf's gamebooks. Lock, stock, and fang.
Y'know, assorted psychos of the world, there's a REASON why White Wolf now puts extremely obvious disclaimers in ALL of its books since then...
[edit]
Okay...I just had a random thought...
Wouldn't it be extremely creepy if somehow they were RIGHT about the father's plot? Very, very unlikely, I know, but then, my random thoughts TEND to be creepy ^_^

Ha!
It's bad enough that the moron was so crazy as to kill people for a schtick like that but he claimed it was from Vampire that he read this? I run a vampire game and that wouldn't even work!
If you're going to go psychotic and kill for a demented reason at least make it an accurate demented reason!
------------------

Yeah!
What we need to do is provide every rpg-obsessed psycho with a good rules lawyer, who can tell him that his idiotic plans won't work, because of page 231, subtable 3...

*sigh* When will people stop being crazy? And Catz Bartlett, you're right that is a creepy thought.
Also, on a semi-related side-note: A fellow intern is planning on getting together one of these Vampire RPGs for us to play. She drafted me because I play MtG. I've never role-played before and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on how to get prepared for this? I'm not sure but I suppose it is going to be sorta like what Rikk and gang was playing in the comic.

I thought people had latched onto violent video games, and given up on bashing RPGs?
Funny, but they normally blame V:tM LARPing, and play-by-Email is about as far from that as you can get.
Oh, and WildMartin, do try to read the main book before you play, the Vampire World of Darkness is extremely well-defined, so it makes a huge difference if you have all the info.

I have big problems with blaiming media directly, and this game is highly susceptible to that. After the columbine shootings, and the San Francisco Chronicle managed to (somehow) blame it on "a game these 'goths' play called 'Vampire'" we weree involved in a game in the Winter Garden at the WTC - while security never minded us (there was a strong history of LARPers there) - businesses and tourists suddenly decided to refuse service, that sort of thing. Funny thing that teh CHronicle of all things (I think this is before Hearst Publishing bought it) didn't bother to treat it as a legitimately published game and get a quote from White Wolf Publishing. Come to think of it, this article doesn't get any quote from any of the companies.
That's just my statement on this.
Journalistic responsibility my ass.
------------------

How did she abandon her journalistic resposibility?

quote:
... where can I find this book?

Any games shop, most sci-fi shops, and some mainstream bookshops. Many big bookshops like Borders will have a copy (in ours it's with the Graphic Novels). Plus, if you're a fast reader, you can read the background sessions in a few sitting in the chairs they provide.
[This message has been edited by Vitriol (edited 02-13-2002).]

Well anyone who lived through the horrors of that cult that killed all those actors due to what the records were saying when played backwards can tell you people are generally nuts even without a reason.
Although who would want to listen to the Osmond family playing forwards????
Even lunatics can take only so much.
------------------

Well true - I was more talking about the aforementioned SFO Chronicle article that directly talks about said game. Making up the content of said article.
That, and if a company's product is blamed for wrongful death, such as say - Bridgestone Tires - someone from that public relations group is usually called to talk about it.
