Well, at least we know who the real villain of the piece is. Of course she'd be the administrator so totally removed from the common folk she thinks she's God...

Dang it! SpaceWulf is going to play an honorable (at least somewhat) villian. Those are the worst because those guys are smart, coniving, and really tricky. Plus you feel slightly bad when the hero eventually wins. Plus, an evil swan. Thats a new one. Wonder what is going to cause our hero to NOT take the oath?

Are you kidding? They are the best kind and my favorite kind. Even though they tend to be highly competent, they very often will let the hero go at a crucial time due to their honor, should the situation arrive. Not always but often enough.

Remember what he said? "I'll just go do their dog and pony show, kiss their ring, take my ship and go."

The basic plot premise is that said ship, the "Rebel Cry", is going to get scrapped by the Feds, like all of the other Rebel Haulers.

Somehow, I doubt our hero's going to let the Feds get away with trashing the one thing he still has left.

Yes, you misunderstood me. Which would rather have: an enemy that is brash, ignorant, and impulsive or an enemy that is compentent, respectful of your capabilites, and cool under fire? I would rather fave the former. In the end, they are easier to defeat.

Ah you mean from the hero's perspecitve rather than the viewer's perspective. The viewer wants what is more thrilling, the hero wants just whatever gets him out alive with his goals intact. Or am I still misreading?

I agree with Madmoonie. From the perspective of one wishing to see a good story, then it is certainly interesting and exciting to have an honorable, competent, and worthy adversary you can respect.

However if I ever had an enemy I would want him as stupid, arrogant, and foolish as is humanly possible. It might not make for a great story, but people don't see themselves as characters in someone else's story. They just want to win. Glamor or no.

Quite. Given this development, I half-suspect that our hard-working author has access to a copy of Dramatica, a dramatic-structure-design program that has the word "con-tagonist" in it.

Contagonist: A character who has similar goals to he hero, but a different method of achieving them.

Lady Violente is the antagonist; she is the opposite of the hero in every discernible way. She in wealthy, oppressing and powerful; he is poor, oppressed and powerless.

Now compare that to SpaceWulf's character: He is moderately wealthy, controlled, and of moderate power. Landing squarely between the two in every particular.

This is getting good...

Caught in the middle... that does appear to be my fate! I think contagonist seems a fair description...

I do like where Ralph is taking my character (or is it my character's character?) in the story. I like war stories where you have two opposing forces, but they are more victims of circumstance rather than simply being good and evil. Sometimes we're caught up in forces beyond our control and must play out our roles as best we can.

Plus, I sympathize with those characters. If you've ever read Akira the graphic novel, I always liked the Colonel the best. He's confronted on all sides: he has rampant gangs running through the city, a mutated psychic overlord to contend with, mindless bureaucrats as his superiors, etc. And where is he? Caught in the middle. He struggles to keep neo-Tokyo alive, but it was not meant to be... his time has gone... Neo-Tokyo is gone... Kaneda and his gang are the new inheritors of the city and they will be the ones to rebuild from the ashes. At the end, Kaneda, who has often been at odds with the Colonel, invites the Colonel to join him... but the Colonel refuses, choosing to fade away as did his beloved city... they part as friends.

I think I like that sort of "villain" as opposed to the often too-basic black/white story.
