Yeeeeee! I get to talk aerodynamics!!! ***squirms with delight***
This may be more than you guys want to know, though. Forgive me, if I've gone overboard with explaining, but I love this stuff. (~-^)
In the 3rd panel of page 22, you can see the Dart is missing a chunk of rudder, already, from the previous explosion. The rudder is the moveable rear part of the vertical fin, and it's used to control yaw, or lateral right-left movement of the aircraft. When you press the left rudder pedal, the rudder turns to the left, which increases drag on the left side of the tail, so that the tail is pushed toward the right. Simultaneously, the nose turns to the left.
Rudder damage by itself would make the plane hard to handle, though it wouldn't totally incapacitate it. While they were at low level, the plane could still be steered, even if the rudder were completely destroyed. All Max would have to do would be to use the two jets as differentials, increasing or decreasing the power in one or the other to effect a turn, or even diverting some thrust to one of the underside jet nozzles.
The next explosion took a bite out of the outboard port (left) wing, which is where the aileron is. There's an aileron on each wing, on the outboard portion. The ailerons are hinged pieces of metal that can be raised or lowered by turning the yoke (the steering device) to the left or right (or in a fighter, moving the stick left or right). Normally, they are applied in conjunction with rudder pressure, so that the plane banks as it turns. This keeps all the gravitational forces balanced. Turn the yoke to the left, and the aileron on the left goes up, while the one on the right goes down. This increases drag on the top side of the left wing, and on the bottom side of the right one, which causes the left wing to drop while the right one rises.
Losing the outboard portion of the port wing means that there is now more drag on the starboard (right) wing, and subsequently, the aircraft veers to the right. If there were a full and undamaged rudder, Max could probably counter that uneven drag by applying full left rudder.
But...here's the problem: About half of the rudder is missing, so the rudder can, at best, be only half as effective. That may or may not be enough to counter the extra drag.
This problem is compounded by the fact that they're already in EV (escape velocity) boost, which means the engines can no longer be used as differentials. The Dart's engines are designed for one EV boost, then they burn out and have to be replaced. To move the throttle now would snuff the engines, and the plane would quickly drop back to the surface.
Also, the Dart is a medevac. It was designed to go straight in, pick up casualties, and get back out. It has only defensive weapons, and was not intended for the kind of fighter-like aerobatics Max has just put it through. The stress on the airframe probably contributed to the wing damage.
The plane is not, however, on fire. The lines streaming from the nose and wings are supposed to represent airflow, so you can see that in addition to starboard yaw, it's trying to roll inverted. That's the result of the shock waves from the explosion, which was twice as big as the previous ones and closer to the plane's tail. Hope that wasn't too confusing.
To sum it up, I'll paraphrase Ash san's remark: They are indeed in deep doodoo.
(^-^)
Kaichi

I love this too! I notice the Dart doesn't have a horizontal stabiliser on the tail. How do they climb and dive? The nozzles?
And yeah Kimi, I'd say Max is indeed very cool and competent pilot. I think they'll make it ok.
Satake san, will we get to see the Stingray Max talks about? I assume it's a fighter? Max acts and talks like a fighter jock. At least like the two I've met.
Jim

If it is, it seems they're a good ways from it.
I suppose we'll find out this week...
Jim

By the way, they are actually in space, now-- though, just barely. Sorry if that was confusing. I used dark grey behind the Dart, because the black looked bad. I should have made it darker, though, or put in some stars. That might have helped. I may go back and do that, this weekend, if I have a chance.
Jim is right about Max, too. He has a hot temper and a sharp tongue. If they were falling, I'd have had to X-rate the comic, because his language would go through the roof.
(~-^)
Kaichi

But honestly, Max can spout a lot worse than what he's spouting, today. Not that I'm going to allow him to do it--that is, if I can stop him. (~-^)
Writing/drawing him really wears me out. I'm thinking twice, now, about allowing him to become a major character. Today's comic almost gave me a stroke. I usually try to feel whatever emotion the character is feeling, while I'm drawing, so I can get the expressions right. After spending several days in his head, I can see Max desperately needs a furlough...
(~-^)
Kaichi

I know several other comics (including Elf Life) have RASCi ratings. I'm kind of torn about it, myself. On one hand, I think it would be good to limit kids from being able to get to this stuff.
At the same time, I do have an adults-only warning on the entry page of ShadowFall. I really believe it's the parents' reponsibility to supervise their kids while they surf the net. It shouldn't be used as a babysitting device, and neither should the tv, video game machine or movies be used in that way.
Okay, I'll step off the soap box, now.
(^-^)
Kaichi
