I've heard it on the grapevine that the downtime could continue for as much as a whole week. If this is true, then that might well be the last straw for ROCR.net.I am already more discouraged than I was just before the donations temporarily perked me up - and at that time I was one crisis removed from throwing in the towel.
I have no alternatives to Keenspace - other free or inexpensive hosts have content restrictions and popups, I can't afford the more professional hosting situations, and I also don't have the energy to build up (even with the help of many fine programmers of my acquaintance) a suitable automation system. I
And I need the next few weeks to build a campaign to get the readership up to a level that is commercially viable - a gargantuan task since I need about 10 times the audience size that I have. If instead, the site is unavailable for a week and my audience dwindles to zero, I might as well go to the labour agency (after finishing my last freelance job), pick up the pieces and go on.
Not that I'm employable, mind. But there is a time when you just have to give up.
------------------

Next week's strips are now at http://users.bart.nl/~samizdat/
They may never show up on Keenspace. I hope someone can show me the way to a real host - but one which is affordable and has no content restrictions.
------------------

I think the week's downtime thing is a misreading of the first message here
If you read down further you see that Tuesday, maybe Monday is the expected return of service.
You really get way too upset over these things, its a slow time of the year anyway. I know you buy into that gobbly gook that a little downtime will ruin you but if you look at all the successful webcomix you'll notice that they can weather just about any service interruption without lasting damage to their readership. Hell PVP was down for a week last month and Megatokyo just last week and both of them have server set ups as stable as you can get.
Cheer up all may not be well but we're not going to hell in a handbasket just yet.

I feel your pain, sort of. I'm only the writer on our strip (and, I must confess, only an on-again off-again ROCR reader) so I don't really feel the time-commitment burn that writer/artists must get. My partner, James, puts a LOT of work into the art, though, and the fact that we're coming up on a year and only have about 80 regular daily readers is starting to rankle him considerably. Gaps like this don't help, either.
We haven't had a lot of luck finding cheap hosting that will give us the space we need to host the massive amounts of image-data that a comic strip requires...and this is near Montreal, one of the big internet hubs of North America!
All I can say is good luck...

------------------

Well (he said with a red face), it looks like the week of downtime was a false alarm - a misinterpretation by someone else which I spread uncritically. For that, I apologise.
------------------
