Awh I remember when I was in school aged about 8/9 - we had a whole 6 weeks dedicated to Victorian Times during history lessons and at the end we all drew a character from a hat and had to be that person and come in costume at the end of the school term.
I was a Maid to a very rich household. Had a blast. Great little black and white outfit complete with apron and hair cap.

Yes, original characters are certainly acceptable and I will use them as long as they are not too modern or fantastical. So far I've only had to turn down one because he had long lilac hair, pointy ears, red eyes, and claw nails.
