wierd problem with HTML editing

Post by Anarchist »

i use "Nvu" which is an HTML editor. recently i hvae not been able to upload and replace the template on my FTP client. the reason is; when i load "indextemplate.html" it says "cannot be edited for an unknown reason. it will let me edit and save, but then its not replacing the current template. the current template has many issues, such as images not appearing as buttons (supposed to), a shout box constricted to a tiny size, where as other boxs that have been set to the right side arn't. i realized that this (most of the problems) was happening because it wasn't overwriting, and that the newer version SHOULD hypothetically work.

the code for the first page

Code: Select all

i realize this is a lot of code, but thats how it SHOULD look (well, somethings to patch up.)

however,
unexpected.comicgenesis.com is how it looks now- much different in the pic, (the next, previous are text, but its the only thing thats really working correctly :P )

so im wondering; whys it going wrong? whats keeping it from updating? and why can't i get this template for previous comics

any help is muchly appreciated :)

I'm guessing (according to the code you posted) the reason why some of your images are not coming up because the image location link is wrong.

ie:

Code: Select all

<img
 style="border: 0px solid ; width: 200px; height: 50px;" alt=""
 title="Complete month by month archive of The Unexpected"
 src="../Desktop/comicgenesis/backgroundcomic-items/archiveimage.jpg">
should be something like:

Code: Select all

<img
 style="border: 0px solid ; width: 200px; height: 50px;" alt=""
 title="Complete month by month archive of The Unexpected"
 src="/images/archiveimage.jpg">
Just open it in notepad and change the linked locations to the right ones.

I'd be wary of WYSIWYG editors. I mean NVU is pretty good, especially when designing a layout. However, the automatic coding can act buggy (like add extra spacers and mess up links). So after you have the basic design, open it up in notepad to check for the mistakes in coding and fix them.

Do you do 'live' editing or do you edit the templates off-line? What I mean is - do you connect to the server and edit the file with the connection still open, or do you save the file to your computer, work on it at your leisure and then upload it once it's ready?

At the start of your post you said "cannot be edited for an unknown reason". That sounds to me more like you can't save the new version onto the server rather than there being a problem with the code.

It may be that with the current server migration, you just happen to have tried to do a file transfer when it wasn't possible.
