Advertising complaint

Post by B5fan »

I really hate to be negative, but i feel compelled to formally complain about the type of banner ads I am seeing as I read some of the comics on this site. After complaining to the owner of the comic, I learned that it is the CG site itself, so here I am.

Am I the only one disturbed by the flash-based banners advertising religion? I won't go into detail because I don't want to make this about the specific religion because it is not about that, I assure you. And I would have just as much trouble if it were an ad for atheism or a political party, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike all ads but understand and acknowledge their need so I don't mind seeing ads advising me which car to buy or where to rent one from. But, I don't care to see paid ads suggesting how I should think or what I should believe.

I suspect most people are indifferent but I am sure there are some who feel as I do. I suspect the minority would be those who prefer seeing such ads. So, I wanted to express my feelings to those responsible for selecting from where they derive their ad revenue.

Best Regards,

B5Fan

It's probably going to be some kind of bad luck for me to make my first post here, but I agree with you. In fact, after I had signed up to get my own CG site, I had second thoughts about using it because the ad I saw most often was a religious one. I discussed with a friend simply putting a tag below the ad saying I did not personally endorse whatever was up there, but I didn't pounce on the motion because I couldn't remember if there was something in the TOS about it.

Like you, I'd be upset even if it were Buddhism advertising up there - I don't feel it's right or appropriate to try to influence religions period, let alone in an ad on a comic.

Sadly, the only other ad I ever seem to see on my site is the topless chick. I can't decide which one I like least.

CG doesn't deal with the ads, actually, they're run by Keenspot. See this post by Kisai here: http://forums.comicgenesis.com/viewtopi ... t=#1356870

This is Gav: http://forums.keenspot.com/profile.php? ... ofile&u=15

You COULD put a disclaimer if you'd like, I can't think of anything wrong with that. As far as I'm aware, the TOS only mandates that the ads be at the top of the page, above the fold; it doesn't say anything about what you put underneath the ads, so long as you aren't disabling them in some way.

Yay for Firefox! My loyal browser slays the ads before they ever reach my screen! ^_^ I have no idea what gets displayed under the radar, though...

I haven't even seen the ads that run on my site (another Firefox user here) but I Imagine them being sensitive to the area where the person is browsing from... I've seen them do that in other sites but whether CG ads uses that system, I don't know.

Yeah, ads are based on where you are. I've been visiting England for the past few weeks and have been getting UK ads. Some are probably universal--the Keenspot ads, for example--but other than that, they're regionalized to whatever country you're in.

How do I actually get Firefox to block ads? I tried to figure out how to hide them after I saw those same two ads for porn and religion over and over, but I came up empty handed.

Well...

...you're no more compelled to worship the religions advertised than you are to buy the Cialis from the spam in your email inbox.

My comics only get porn ads...

Seriously, though, I think all ads are basically trying to sell you some idea. "Drink our beer and beautiful women will want have sex with you!" "Wear our makeup and you'll be pretty and popular!" Those aren't messages I like or which I want thrown in my face... but that's life. I wouldn't be bothered by religion ads even if I saw them. (But then, that's just me.)

i just ignore them ...
they pay for the bandwith and well thats ok ., i dont care for cross waving loonys any more than telemarketers both are about on the same level with me ( AND NO this is not a statment on how i feel about relegion , i keep that to my self ) i just lump all the ads in that catagory -
