Would you mind NOT putting porno ads on my site?

Post by Valuedan »

Please? I noticed that there was a huge, glaring J-List ad at the top of my site, and I really don't appreciate that kind of thing being there. I don't mind having ad banners on my site... just not pornography. Please. PLEASE.

It appears to be the -only- advert banner showing on my site. No matter how many times one refreshes it's always... that. Is this because the comic is listed as "Mature"?

I was just about to bitch about this as well. Seems like all the 'mature' comics are getting nailed with the porn ads.

That's something that definitely makes me want to pack up my toys and leave.

MA (I belive) and NC-17 rated sites are now running ads through a different vendor. Me, Kisai, and Darren are testing them out. Feedback is appreciated. Please leave your webcomic's URL with your post, if you don't have a link to your comic in your signature (we won't nuke your comic -- we want to make sure it's targeting things right).

I'll sticky this thread so folks can comment here.

I do NOT like this ad. I have no problem with any of the ads I've seen except this. Just because my comic happens to be geared towards an adult audience, that's only because I like to swear and make sexual references. I do not want my ads to be of a similar nature.

Some of these J-List ads are a little explicit. (I'm thinking of the PC Dating sim one). It's not very tasteful, and probably not appropriate for web MA, at the least.

Also, my audience is female. I doubt the majority of them want to see half-naked Japanese dating sim women blushing in that oh-I'm-so-aroused-take-me-now sort of way when they read my comic.

The J-list ads are ONLY appearing on MA/NC-17 comics. There is an override for telling the ad server your comic is PG or something, but then we'd get in trouble from the G/PG advertisors. (This override exists purely for debugging and I can remove it.)

If you want different ads to appear on your site, find some more advertisors and point them to http://www.keenspot.com/mediakit/

... and If there is a serious problem, ie your site is getting trashed by some javascript, do let us know.

I would appreciate more feedback though on this.

Gav specificly said he wanted the ads on the MA and NC17 sites (in fact he thought they were the same)

Especially as you're not supposed to go to the site unless you're over 18 anyway.

And you need to put the AD on the top of your site.

Chris and your feedback has convinced us to kill the ads for MA comics. They are now running on NC-17 only.

The only exception is Ghastly, who has a seperate agreement with us.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

Also, I wasn't aware that the ad was supposed to be at the top of the site until just now. I'll make the change soon.

No matter what the site rating I this ad seems likely to brass off a lot of people, comicers and readers alike. I think that there are going to be four major reactions, most of which reflect quite poorly on Comic Genesis:

* EWW! Gross gross gross!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

* My my my, that ad's rather degrading for females. I think I'm offended.

* Just because I read webcomics they expect me to go out and buy an elegant personal massager??? WTF?!?!?!?

* Hot damn!!! You can get those things shaped like 'Hello Kitty'? Cool!

For the record, I wouldn't be particularly concerned if that ad appeared on rocr.comicgenesis.com .

My standards are if it doesn't have sound, popunders, popups or spyware, it's acceptable. I might cringe a bit if some hate group advertised on there, but as they'd only be wasting their money I'm not going to stop them.

Of course, I so far haven't slapped a rating on my comics.

I belive the unrated comics are getting the regular ads from BurstNet. Kisai did change the ad code again, and I'm going to familiarize myself with it before I need to break it.

Actually, I never asked Kisai to put the ads up on the MA sites--only the NC17 ones. I believe there was a misunderstanding, when I asked if our regular ads were running on the MA sites, I think she thought I asked if these J-List ads were running on the MA sites and then inferred that I wanted them up there. In reality, I simply hadn't decided yet if I wanted to run them on the MA sites--I was just trying to determine the difference between the ratings to determine if it would be appropriate or not.

Anyway, that doesn't matter. The ads are not pornographic and neither is the advertiser. The advertiser sells a great variety of Japanese products, some of which are adult themed. There is no actual pornography in the ads, themselves.

Those of you who draw adult comics should understand that most bulk advertisers will not allow advertising on your sites. As such, your sites are a net loss to us, as we cannot run advertising on them. We have simply been nice about this in the past.

Here, I have managed to sell a form of non-pornographic advertising that is appropriately targetted to a "mature" audience, as a method of benefiting all of you, by helping your sites pay for their bandwidth. Any other hosting company would have simply cancelled all your accounts as unprofitable long ago, or charged for them. But that's not our aim. Our aim is to provide free services to all cartoonists, regardless of content.

After hearing about Joey Manley's problems getting payment providers to handle subscriptions for adultwebcomics.com, I feel your pain.

How are things going, advertising-wise? I was doing a bit of maintenance on my comicgenesis site and I noticed a lot of "Please advertise here" in the banner spot. How can creators help you fill those spots?

I have a sort-of related question. My comic was originally listed as Mature, but I kind of think it needs an NC-17 rating now.. When i went to the comicdata on the new siteadmin to change it however, i couldn't see where i have that option anymore.

I know that my computer doofery can be a pain in the ass here, and i apologize, but I'm still just getting used to the whole new comicgen set up.

btw, i noticed that there haven't been any ads running on mine or several other CG Comics for over a week.

I think you can still only change your rating over at the old siteadmin. You might not be able to login; if that happens, just try again at a later date.
