the ghost comic

Post by CarrotsNmySOX »

i have a mysterious comic on my calender for feb. 20th which isnt the real one for feb. 20. it merely leads to the main page again when clicked on (which has the proper feb. 10th comic on it btw) it also shows up by way of the next button.

so... whats up with that?

I think it's obvious, you site is possessed by demons. Or you possibly misnamed the comic.

Yeah, make sure that the filename's right, and that it's under the right format.

Go to my site and look at the problem, you dont seem to understand it. The feb 20 comic i have uploaded is NOT APPEARING- its acting like it should be. However, there is a link on the feb 20th on my calender and when you click on it it goes to indextemplete.html.

If it matters, i have many future comics uploaded. the problem doesnt seem to have anything to do with the file which is why im confused. I mean, its not even a comic from the future, just a random, useless link

okay i just went to my little WS_FTP and checked it out. the 20040220 comic had been moved out of workspace/comics/ and i found it and its page in public folders (in other words from the filing point of view it looked like any updated image) HOWEVER the comic is NOT appearing on my site repeat NOT appearing. only a link to it (a link into the future) which doesnt work.

I deleted the public html file and jpg file and re-uploaded the image to its proper workspace/comics/ folder. it doesnt seem to have fixed the link problem on the site and i'm not sure if it'll stay there through the next update.

and yes yes yes it is name correctly. thats why the link is on feb 20th which is the correct date for the comic yet is still in the future.

this doesnt seem to have any current serious effects, but more may develop in the future, so i'd still like to sort this out. I'm worried what'll happen on the 20th.

I think I know why that's happening. I think that because you manually updated the comic by putting it in the public folder, them the page's up, but the server won't recognize the comic its self because it's not supposed to be there. If I'm right, the comic should appear on February 20th.

Okay, "neat trick"

comics you want to appear -now- must be dated today or earlier, then manual update

comics you do not want to appear -now- must be dated after today

HOWEVER

you can also upload future comics to /public_html/comics and the /d/ pages will be generated for them.

So if we decided to drop autokeen (without changing the settings) and uploaded comics to the /public_html/comics directory, the /d/ html pages would be generated whether we already had archive pages or not? Interesting. Incidently, if we manually created /d/ html pages would autokeen overwrite them? ie. does it keep track of the pages it creates or does it check the directory before making pages?

keen will overwrite the /d/ pages. Always. Autokeen has to be turned off for that not to happen.

Still if the templates exist (and are not undefined in edit_comicinfo.cgi when the system does periodic mass updates, all the changes made to files in /public_html are ovewritten

you only want to upload files to /public_html/comics when:
1. You are time travelling, so you need a page generated in the future
2. You numricly update your comic greater than the current date, like 10020040215 , in which case turn off the calander or it may never update.

Okay obviously no one GETS what my problem is/was because everyone keeps saying i named it wrong or uploaded to the wrong spot. naming a comic wrong doesnt make it appear on the CORRECT day but the correct day was in the FUTURE (thus the problem)

as for uploading to the wrong folder, dont patronize me. Besides, i upload in chunks of 4-5 comics and only one had a problem

BUT NEVERMIND because apparently i fixed it all by my self.

AHEM:

If you upload to /workspace/comics , the file will be copied over on the day it's dated.

If you upload to /public_html/comics, the file will appear in the archives on the next "full" update.

This is forum is not official customer service/support, the people here volunteer their time to help, and if you don't like the answers you get, only KISAI(that would be me) or RedWolfie can look at the site on the server to determine the problem... Nobody else here other than you can see your directory structure, so they can not go through a troubleshooting scenario without offering all the steps.

Grah! I hate it when people bite the hand that helps them.
