3rd "The Sites are down" topic!
yeah, what I meant by complaining being helpful would be to ask them directly "Do you know the site is down" in chat. A couple times thats how Kelly learned of poor CG being down cause he was at work.
I certainly didn't mean to gripe about lack of status reports, but it is certainly something to consider in the future. I think what was being suggested IS constructive, but far too harsh to be seriously considered.
That, and I don't think Kelly or Kisai draw any worthwhile income from this site, so the fact they're doing anything is something to appreciate.

I wish to complain about the amount of people telling other people not to complain.
If there was an official update thread or news post, no one need ever come into a complaint thread unless they actually wanted to vent. The admins wouldn't have to see the whining and complaining and those who don't wish to participate can avoid the whole thread, instead of having to weed through the whining, complaining and suggestions to find any information whatsoever about what is going on.

So you're complaining that too many people are telling the too many complainers not to complain, and the sum of all the people complaining and telling people not to complain is drowning out any useful discourse in this topic?
Heh. I like you.
<-- funny tongue smiley, not frowny one.

I figure if people spent as much time on threads like as they did on their comics… CG would be a <i>publishing </i>company....

Hey, I take pride in the quality of my comic... I've managed to churn out at least 3 new strips today while I was at my day job and I've got a spreadsheet mapping out my storylines til the end of the year.VIIStar wrote:I figure if people spent as much time on threads like as they did on their comics… CG would be a <i>publishing </i>company....
I'm just wondering why there are over 3800 in queue for update and it hasn't moved an inch since this morning. I've got readers and they expect my comics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, like I said they would be when I started this up. So when it's not up, I'M the one getting yelled at and complained to that it's not there when I said it would be.
BTW, this post isn't as inflamatory as it may look. I'm just stating my business. And yes, it's a free service and THANK YOU for that. Seriously.

Yeah...how about we just keep "everyone stop complaining" posts out of this thread? This topic is about talking about the problems Comicgen is having...that's it's entire point. If you don't like people talking about their frustrations and problems with the current site problems, click on another thread.VIIStar wrote:I figure if people spent as much time on threads like as they did on their comics… CG would be a <i>publishing </i>company....

The Television Without Pity "Lost" forum has, for example, a Bitterness Fiesta thread where people get to vent, rend their garments, joke, and post links to appropriately themed mixed drinks. A lot of clever humour and camaraderie comes out of the thread, and people get to let off steam without getting in anyone else's hair. In fact, a moderator had to post a sticky telling people to stop posting "why the hate?" posts in the thread that was all about snark and commiserating
Commiseration is a good and positive thing for some people. It helps people get past the frustration of times when the server goes down, by hanging out with buddies and grousing a bit (and even complain about people complaining about the complaining! recursion is fun!). It's good to get a pat on the back without getting thumped with "I don't see you offering any free hardware." There's benefit in feeling like there's a safe place to post where you don't have to add a boilerplate "I appreciate CG thiiiiiis much (please don't hurt me)" statement.
Now, some folks might say to this, "get a life, suck it up, what's wrong with you?" and I understand why the mods/admins might feel hurt; but it'd be just as easy to understand that one thread is going to be all about howling until people feel better, and everyone else could read a different thread. So, if this thread were for venting, participants could post whatever updates they hear about, they could sigh amongst themselves about missing their update schedule, and I could get my glass of tequila.
It's all about the tequila.

Hear Hear to Tequila.
Here's my mirror site for Tanenger Tales in the meantime, until the 6/19/07 strip goes up (most likely sometime during 6/20/07)
Marty Tanenger Tales
Yeah... it's another message board, though I wouldn't recommend venturing further into the other threads on it unless nothing (and I mean NOTHING) offends you.
And the Queue is at 4151. Hip Hip Hoor-OH GOD!!!

Oh, man, it's a challenge. Maybe I'll venture in after I'm padded with a few shots and a wedge of lime. But if it's really scary in there I won't admit I looked.rwbu.wsmith@gmail.com wrote:Yeah... it's another message board, though I wouldn't recommend venturing further into the other threads on it unless nothing (and I mean NOTHING) offends you.

I really don't care if you go off somewhere else in some bitching thread, but I said back on page one that this thread right here will not turn into one. For God's sake, we have an "Unhappy Thread" right down in Off Topic if you want to yell. Go crazy.
This is not the forum to do it and especially this is not the thread to do it. People have posted other things that are wrong such as the queue is/was backed up, but those helpful posts are lost between all of these other venting posts. I don't think the admins want to wade through 15 posts like the ones that have been made here and in other threads just to see what does and doesn't work.
So if a forum mod and forum admin are asking you--for reasons explained many times over--to stop complaining in this particular thread, this one right here, and keep posts limited to actual posts about the state of the server, you should probably listen.

The updater has over 4000 updates in the queue, and doesn't seem to be moving. Just FYI. That's of Wednesday morning, 5:45 central time. I hope that helps.---Al
PS. In the interim, I posted today's update to my character's livejournal at http://mmsophia.livejournal.com/. My more faithful readers know to look there if the update's not at the usual time.

Well, there you have it for the current discussion of "why don't we use this thread for that and a sticky for the other." I suppose I misremembered what the person who started the thread posted about the need for this thread. Or I remember someone else's discussion about the impetus for keeping this thread open and alive after the other ones had been summarily shut down as unnecessary and unwanted by the mods/admins. I could go back and read the past couple of pages to check, but I can't be bothered to bother, on account of the tequila hangover.Mercury Hat wrote:So if a forum mod and forum admin are asking you--for reasons explained many times over--to stop complaining in this particular thread, this one right here, and keep posts limited to actual posts about the state of the server, you should probably listen.
So, everyone else, why not try this: I'm uploading my new comics the usual way and adding them to the super-queue, but what I've also been doing is adding the newest comic to the index.html page manually. I could upload the image file to a regular directory on CG, but since the comic is mirrored elsewhere, I just use a link pointing to that image. Then I have a little notice at the top saying "If you're seeing this notice, blah blah servers not working monkeyshines, see the latest comic [date] below." I'll end up with a long front page if the server outage carries on for long, but it's a good way to keep things up to date and cleans itself up automatically whenever the server lumbers back up to speed. I've done this on serveral occasions, when the site is accessible and not completely unconscious. Of course, you have to have a little html knowledge and be able to ftp your way to your index file.
I love CG thiiiiiiiiis much. But I don't have any free server hardware to offer.

Just as an update, we have a thread the administrators get an email on whenever a new post is made to it. I posted to the thread reminding them to kick the updater since it's been plugged continuously since yesterday.
I'm not seeing the errors Turnsky mentioned - I can get to other CG sites. They aren't updating... but I can get to them.

They were down about an hour ago.well then, mighta been just me, my 'net has been acting up a little as of late.
The sites appear to be back up and I was able to get on FTP to upload my latest page and notes. The update queue, however, is at mighty number--4159--that even makes a wait at the DMV seem like a breeze. Heh.
