Frankly, if 'free' were all CG had going for it, I wouldn't be here.

Images behind too...?

Post by Amicable_keith »

I know that all the comics are being uploaded to the new server, which is why the siteadmin is behind. But is it normal for new images not to show up too? I uploaded new images and only one has appeared (the banner). I also uploaded new web pages and those have not appeared either. (By the way, my comic is http://www.somanylevelscomic.com.)

If you uploaded the new images to your workspace images folder, I would not be surprised if the software had not yet transfered them to the public images file... just because things are made of molasses right now.

New webpages I don't think are going to update until everything else updates.

It's now 4:51 Sunday.
I still have Wednesday's comic up.

Does this kind of thing happen often?

it's a rare occurrence, usually associated with a new server install, (or the events leading up to a new server install, such as old hardware dying)

I've been here since 2005, and this is the first time I've seen it this bad. That, or I didn't notice...

Yeah, I've been here, what, going on a year now? And the server has frozen up half a dozen times, and the site has gone offline for a day or more on half a dozen occasions, but this is the first time since I've been here that there has been such a prolonged update freeze.

The circumstances have an explanation, but the timing was awful for me--not so much the lack of automatic update (I've been slow on creating updates anyway), but those times when the site was completely inaccessible. I've never had this extended a problem with any other service provider (even on servers doing some massive grunt work for multiple online communities), but those ISPs presumably had large staffs and large fundage for putting in large grunting servers, and could work through the night on problems. I assume all the tech people here have to find time to manage the servers around their day jobs. I don't know how much income the advertising on our comics brings in, but I doubt anyone is making their living off it (or, correct me if I'm wrong about that, because it would be pretty nifty for them if they were).

Everything appears to be working now. I just uploaded the new images and they appeared. One of them was misspelled (whoops). But maybe things were slow anyway. I'm just glad everything is working! :D

If it helps the mods at all, I could see it FINE earlier this morning---and yes, it updated last night, just as it should. Up to 6:30 to 7 Central time the sites were coming up fine---it must have gone down after that, because when I tried to look at it from work at 8, zilch.---Al
