Can't upload to public_html

Post by Pitt »

I'm trying to get a news box into my site and I have my news.html file ready to be uploaded but whenever I try I get a "Transfer failed: Permission denied" error while using SmartFTP. The site has been up since the 22ed of this month. How do I get permission to write to this folder?

You shouldn't be uploading to /public anyway, do all your work in /workspace. Check out the faqs for more info.

As for the authorisation requirement, that's probably just a momentary problem with the server, happens with me sometimes.

In the FAQ it says though "connect to your account via ftp and upload the news.html file to the public_html folder". So that's why I'm trying to write to it in the first place.

Yes you can upload to the public_html side and there are some things that you are supposed to upload there. But most people are strongly advised against it as there are many ways for someone who does not know what they are doing to "damage" their comic.

pitt: what error messages (if any) are you getting, and which steps are you trying to do in order to upload? Let us know and we wil be better able to help you out...

I first get a "File size check (SIZE) failed. File not found or permission denied." error, then a "553-Can't open that file: Permission denied" finaly a "Transfer failed" error.

In order to upload I just have the public_html folder open in SmartFTP and I'm dragging the file into the directory, I've also tried uploading it by doing the right click, upload, direct method. The same error is reproduced.

Wow, that's ... weird.

The file size error is an odd one. How big is the news.html file?

The file not found seems to suggest to me that it's not finding it on your computer.

Can you upload to the workspace folder?
Can you upload any other files to public_html?

I know that there are some accounts with the "permission denied" errors, you can find out about them in the sticky posted thread at the top of the help forum (marked "server change woes" or something). See if anything in there is related to your account...

Hmm... there's been a few people getting the 553 (permission denied) errors when they shouldn't be.

Have a read through this thread and see if you can find anything that applies to you (thread's kinda long, but there is a whole bunch of information there, even if it is scattered around... )

There's a bunch of people with upload issues at the moment.

I wonder if it's a server-side problem? But if it was, there'd be more than just a handful of people affected...
