I suppose I could go above and beyond and actually read the whole thread in future rather than the first half, but in any case, does this mean I have to download a copy of firefox to access the siteadmin? o_O

I don't know. I'm using Firefox right now and I get the same message you are, minus the lines of code. Basically:
Your browser is broken, please use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera or something that supports HTTP Authentication!
I'm as stumped as you..... :(
ANYTHING is possible...within limits.
Those limits are set on ourselves by ourselves.
The trick is getting around them...

I can log in to siteadmin with both IE7 and Firefox now. After logging in with IE, however, clicking on my comic name to access the options results in:
Your browser is broken, please use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Opera or something that supports HTTP Digest Authentication compliant with RFC2617!(Opera does not appear to do this right ATM...)
Firefox seems to work fine with it, though.

It wasn't working for me.

What it would was as soon as I hit 'ok' after filling in the form was to give me a very brief error message (on screen for less than half a second) which I *think* said something like 'retrying password' and then it would give me the old style (as in the new one from Butch) login page which would then do a circular loop.

What I did was to type in my password in all caps (normally all lower caps) which then gave me the "you're browser busted" message.

Then I filled in a load of garbage for my password and it gave me the http login screen again.

Then I filled it in properly and it let me in. I can now log in with Mozilla, Firefox and IE (V6, I think).

Not sure if that'll help anyone, but you could try loging in with an incorrect password and then the correct password and see if that works...

Edit: oh wait, I also put in the ?&logout between step 1 and 2 to force a logout...

I have tried all the suggested methods for the response "Username not valid! You must have a ComicGenesis Forum login", but nothing yet has worked. As the username and password clearly still work to get into the forums, I'm certain I'm not typing it incorrectly. I've used both the latest Firefox and IE7 with no luck. If all of this logging in and logging out and shutting down browsers and reopening windows doesn't work, does anyone else have any suggestions?

Comicgen won't accept my username and password when they are correct- after typing it in into the strange new log in box it insists on telling my it is invalid- does this have a link to why my site is now saying "forbidden"

in addition to this- I'm concerned about the appearance of folders and html pages that seem to be replicating themselves from what I can see from my ftp- is this some server fault or does it sound like tampering from a live user? I tried to log into comicgen so I could change my password to make sure other people wern't logging in to my account, and that's when I discovered my inability to log into comicgen.

Help would be REALLY appreciated!

Another method to try:

For those who can't get into siteadmin, read this thread, then try to log into the new QuickAdmin.

QA is designed as a fast, cut-down version of siteadmin but if you can log into that one, there's a chance that it may force the database to change and then let you log into siteadmin normally, if I'm reading hi-bry's post correctly...

Well, I can get into QuickAdmin fine, but still no siteadmin access.

But I am using the latest version of Firefox.

And bugs aside, but I'm pretty displeased by the being forced to upgrade my web browser if I want to use siteadmin. Right now, I'm on someone else's computer, and this is NOT the computer I normally use. The one I actually do the comic on runs Windows ME and no better, so updating to the latest browser isn't feasible.

NOTE: you get the "your browser busted" message when it doesn't recognise your password as well.

I don't think that that error message means what it says. So far, nobody that has gotten that message has been using an old browser or upgraded their browser and fixed the problem.

Try this:
  1. Full reboot (including clearing the cache / cookies)
  2. Log on to Comic Genesis forum
  3. Stay logged in forums and open new window / tab
  4. In new window / tab go to siteadmin
  5. If logged out, skip to step 8 below
  6. If logged in - log out by adding ?&logout to url
  7. When logged out, close that window / tab and open a new one
  8. Put in THE WRONG PASSWORD but the correct forum login name
You should get the http password entry screen again
  9. Put in the right forum name / password again (probably won't work)
  10. Log out (by putting ?&logout) if it didn't log in
  11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 about a dozen times
Note for Steps 5/6: If you don't get the http authentication pop-up then that means that your computer has you as 'logged in' - in other words, as having supplied details. You need to get that screen to come up so you can enter your details.

That worked for me, but there may have been something else that affected it and caused it to work. If it works for you, great! Let us know.

If it doesn't, don't bother trying to log in for a while until Kisai or Stredwolf post a message saying it's working. Check in the Help Center on occasion to keep updated on the latest proceedings.

While you shouldn't have to actually reboot (unless you are on Windows 95/98/ME) closing and opening the browser should be sufficient combined with ?&logout

However Opera (still working on it, I've posted a message to the opera forum now) doesn't appear to send the right string altogether, and any other web browser not following this, well I don't know.

I'm going to re-enable the 'junk' on the top of the siteadmin so I can futher debug IE. If your browser does not work while you see 'junk' on the top of the screen, try a different browser or logout for a minute and try again.

Please note that Mozilla has a 'clear private information' that you can try too.

About 10 minutes after posting to the Opera forum I figured out the problem by myself. I can get IE, Firefox, Safari and Opera on my windows machine to work. I'm assuming it works on the mac as well.
