html newbie help

Ok, this is getting very frustrating. I am currently trying to add a title pic next to the comic title and author name. I have uploaded the png file to the image folder in the workpace area, and I tried uploading it to the image folder in the public area. I added <(coding)img src=images/title.png/> to both the indextemplate.html and the dailytemplate.html in the workspace folder. the image to be used in named title.png. What I am getting on the site though is the code showing up where I want the image to be. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Where did I mess up and how do I fix it?

Also, where can I find tutorials on basic html coding?

You messed up in your HTML. This is what you need to get it to work.

Your title will work fine if you use this.

nope. I changed the code to what you posted and I am seeing the code, not the image.

I must be missing something somewhere.

You wouldn't happen to be using Word (or a similar word processing software) to edit your HTML, would you? Cuz your code has wonky little extra characters, typical of code saved in Word.

What I see when I view your page's source:

What it should look like:

img src="/images/title.png"

Also, I don't see any reason for bold tags around an image.

If you are using Word, try a text editor like Notepad instead. Notepad won't introduce funky formating into your HTML.

Click here for a decent basic html tutorial. It's quick, and, if you do it right, you'll understand html that much better.

Check out WebMonkey for some other tips and tricks.

so much for frontpage. Guess I'll be doing all the coding with notepad from now on. got it fixed. Thanks for the help. and thank you for the html tutorial.

You likely typed the code in the WYSIWYG area of frontpage. < and > are used when you want the page to actually have a < or a > in the page instead of ending or beginning an html tag. There should be somewhere in frontpage where you can directly edit the source. You could also use frontpage's built in image insertion button.

I can't really be of a lot of help since i don't have access to frontpage.

This strikes me as rather odd...

When viewed with Opera or Internet Explorer, my site http://felquon.comicgenesis.com appears as I intended (charcoal grey background, text is white, link and vlink colors are a bit lighter than usual so they show up on the grey). However, when viewed with Firefox the site background is white, text black, links default blue/purple. Any idea why?

Another question. One of my non-comic images loads fine. The other will not work. The code to insert both of them is the same except for the filename. Both files are stored in the same folder (public -> images). What the heck is wrong with it? again, http://felquon.comicgenesis.com for my source code.

Claire, I'm trying to get to the bottom of the Mozilla issue. My guess is that it has something to do with the coding being the type that IE and Opera recognize, and Mozilla doesn't. I can't pinpoint it, though.

As for the images thing, check the name. I notice that, on the source you have img src="/images/Banner template.jpg" . Spaces, I'm pretty sure, don't work properly in html names. So try changing it to Bannertemplate.jpg.

well, do you have all your files saved into one folder, and set frontpage to see that folder as a website?

One of my friends tried to help me out a bit... we tried putting # in front of the hexadecimal codes (ex. bgcolor="#444444" ) and moving bgcolor into the same tag as the text colors (not sure why I had it separated, guessing it's not good that I had opened two <body> tags). I uploaded a new daily and index HTML files - they have the hexadecimal change as well as a spaceless filename for the banner template (new image to match). However it's taken several hours to update so far.

For anyone trying to help me - if you don't see # in the hexadecimal codes, it's my old page and hopefully the edits fixed it. If you DO see # that means it updated. If it's still not working right, any ideas you may have are welcomed.

(the banner template is just a tan block at the moment. That's not an error.)

what the crap... my site WILL NOT UPDATE!

I've updated the HTML twice, and it worked fine. The latest version just won't go through! It's been nearly a day since I used SiteAdmin to trigger a full update. If I look in my FTP, the index.html file in Workspace is my new one. The one in public_html is my old one. I tried updating again about 3 hours ago and it still isn't going. Should I try deleting the one in public? I know, you're not usually supposed to mess with that... but maybe it would actually look for the file in Workspace then? I don't know... (not going to try that unless one of you knowleadgable people says to)

Do you have both an indextemplate in your "workspace" and an index.html in your "workspace/webpages"? If so, the system will get confused. Just keep the indextemplate in yout workspace, and tweak that.

Putting a # in front of all the hexadecimal codes solved the color problems (background and text). Thanks to a buddy for figuring that out.

Images - I realized that the filename of the image ended in .JPG, and my code said .jpg. Changed it to caps, and now it works. (duh)

Using indextemplate instead of index solved my upload problem. Thanks to a different buddy for bad advice, and Black Sparrow for solving it!
