I think only people who live in Southern California would get the "mugging in Irvine" quote. I mean, I've known some weird stuff to happen in Irvine, but i'm pretty sure getting mugged in broad daylight isn't one of them. Irvine's like Anaheim. Maybe there's a scanner somewhere on campus you can use? I know the computer lab at school has scanner's to use. I thought you said your scanner was broken anyway, as well as the hub? Maybe you can get the scanner fixed too?
