Free Comic Book Day!

So - Saturday, 2 May 2009, is Free Comic Book Day ... Does this happen in the UK? I don't know. It seems to be a big thing in the US, though, so at Broken Voice Comics we felt we ought to participate somehow. Unfortunately, we don't have any of our titles in print, and so - as Ryan so neatly puts it...

Thy Will Be Done is written by Alexandre Lobao and boasts gorgeous artwork by E.C. Nickel (the talent...

It's not work made for hire. It's absolutely not work made for hire. The term work-for-hire is a legal term which specifically means that the copyrights of work you produce is owned by the company outright, and you have no claim to those rights. This is technically true, of course, and I didn't mea...

I was idly considering submitting to Zuda, but...no, not on these terms. At least, not with any story I cared about. I'd submit a throw-away concept that I wasn't enamored with ... Personally, I wouldn't even do that. Suppose you came up with an instantly disposable idea, like ... oh, I don't know ...

As far as I can see, this is essentially the same type of deal DC and Marvel have been offering creators for years. You get paid. They take all rights and control. It's work-for-hire in all but name. Many creators will be happy with that, I'm sure. Anyone hoping that Zuda would be offering something...

I saw the first episode last Monday. It focused almost entirely on the Beano and the Dandy which was a bit of a shame. Even a cursory nod to their fore-runners ( Comic Cuts etc) would have been nice. But it was well done. The insights into the creation of characters like Minnie the Minx (and others)...

Shades: Chapter 7 - launched and naked!

Yes, Broken Voice Comics has just posted the first page of Chapter 7 of its online graphic novel Shades . And yes, it is a full page splash of one of the main characters. Naked. Sadly for all heterosexual males, it's neither the perky young Becky Allen nor the rather more feisty Boo . But, if you ha...

Yes, sadly, today's instalment at Broken Voice Comics is the last page of Issue 1 of Lee Munday's frighteningly funny slice-of-life comic The Lumbering Dead . http://www.brokenvoice.co.uk/News%20files/Zombie%2001.jpg The good news is that, in the best zombie tradition, the demise of Issue 1 is only ...

Hey, thanks! I've been lucky enough to work with a number of different artists (all cool!) which is why we have a range of different styles at the site. Not the old "open manhole cover" routine again? That catches those blind lawyers out every time!

I'll go for a story-driven comic every time. I'm not saying all story-driven webcomics are great (there's some dreadful stuff out there!) or that all gag-strips are bad (there are a one or two which are really innovative) but as an admittedly broad generalisation, it seems to me that many of the sto...

I've just always wanted to tell stories. Not necessarily in comic form (although I did make a few at school to be passed furtively around the classroom!) I wanted to write big, epic stories with serious themes and complex characters but which were also fun to read. It was only when I discovered Watc...
