Testing on Network 23 . . . Twenty minutes into the future; but almost tolerably quick to load :-? Still needs some work, guys, but its getting better :) of course, it does depend on how loaded the forum server is right now  Regards, Muttley 8) (and a special booby prize for the most gra...

Is any of it generated dynamically?
It has taken me this long to get the board to stay up long enough to get a response posted  Some looking around gives me the following snapshots: a phpbb v1.4.4 10-response thread is 26K a phpbb v2.0.0 2-response thread (this one) is 108K and loads in 5 minutes an Ikonboard 2.2 b5 11-reply thre...

Is it or isn't it?
Since swearing and taboo words are socially-defined, the taboo status of a word can, I suppose, only be defined in its social context. It is complicated (for English) by the wide spread of the language into many different continents, lands and societys. In the UK I would say that damn is not regarde...

Poor performance; linked to page size?
The size of the page containing my "swearwords" thread on the Fans forum is 163 KB, of which 118 Kb is associated with the Keenspace Forum Index link and the Jump To dropdown. The page is ten times the size of a similar page on an EZ board. I suspect this has a lot to do with the abysmally poor perf...

Well, well well
:o It let me post! It actually let me post!! Only took ten minute too... :-? You learn somethhing new every day . . . I had no idea that "damn" would be regarded so widely as a taboo word. If you would indulge me further, is there a regional aspect to this i.e. are there areas of North America where...

I'd better preface this with "sorry for any inadvertent offence I may cause . . ." Posting in another forum, I finished with "praising with faint damn's" to indicate wholehearted approval. Next day I go back to find that a moderator had edited the post to read "praising with faint darn's" and had ad...

Just read in my newspaper that Damon Knight died on Sunday. A Hugo winner for his criticism (In Search of Wonder, 1956), I remember him most for his Orbit anthologies, which were significant at the time (along with Ted Carnell's New Writings ) in that they contained only new stories. He was one of t...

Steve; I'm 50, Kate's - a little younger. We both remember Thomas Covenant from first publication. I'm not offended by Donaldson, but I won't waste any more time on his books because they are dull . Flaming great doorstops, trilogies you could build a house out of, and not an interesting moment to b...

Nice to have some mainstream recognition, though I'm not a great Bradbury fan. Just in case my vote is unclear, I vote he stays. On sufferance, and with a warning and a clear explanation of why his conduct is unacceptable. If he continues to offend after that, then he has to go. But really, as yet we have only seen one side of him. Of course, that may be the only side - - - Mu...

It is very early to take this kind of action on a new member of the club. None of them really know him yet; there are grounds for "disciplinary action", a stern warning in private, from Will maybe. But kicking out is too extreme at this stage. All of his actions so far will count against him in any ...

What is it about Stu that makes him such a target for our ire? For me, it's his selfishness. The only person he cares about is Stu; Stu first, everyone else nowhere. This separates him from the rest of the Club, who have all shown that they care about each other. Stu's not dumb, and I think he knows...
