From a biology standpoint, I think I can contribute some factual answers to some of the questions raised here. The question was raised early in the thread about when measurable brain activity appears. It appears late in the pregnancy, generally after 21 weeks; and no, it doesn't appear suddenly, not...

For all that the Democrats accuse the Bush administration of "being out of touch", they don't exactly demonstrate a sterling grasp of the world, or of the mindsets of their constituents, themselves. Rangel and it seems a few of the other prominent Democrats are just idiots who are incredibly out of ...

Hey guys! I could use your help. As part of an assignment for school, I made a poster for Rebel Cry. Tell me what you think. Rebel Cry Poster . Thanks and have a merry IGLOO!!! Good poster! But I think it needs something to break up all that white space -- besides the ship, I mean. Just a bit more ...

No abortion after the heart starts beating? I fail to see why the existence or non-existence of a heartbeat would make it more or less unethical to abort. A heartbeat may be used as the legal, technical definition of "alive", but it has no special ethical meaning. As opposed to brain activity. Prob...

<snip> As for 'scientism', it does exist - primarily among the scientifically ignorant sections of the Progressive Left. Perhaps you might want to read the man's biography before you condemn him to your ghetto category of "people with a deep religious view". The man was a medical doctor, a scientist (chemist), and a philosopher of science. His son won the nobel prize in chemistry in 1986. Yes...and? Believe me, being...

Meh. You HAD to know I'd respond to this one, didn't you? Polanyi makes a mistake very common to people with a deep religious view which takes precedence over any other way of doing things: he makes the assumption that the basis of any belief or way of doing things is equal to religion. Unfortunatel...

Hmm, yeah, I'm with Deckard straight the way through on this one. And Wanderwulf. (A cat agreeing with two canines -- what next?) The forced kiss was crass, but it wasn't rape. It wasn't anywhere near rape. I don't actually consider his temper that much of a flaw, most of the time. Truth is, if you'...

Sorry I disappeared for a couple days, there. I got a wadge of homework I had to deal with. Because I can't resist flogging this particular dead horse, I'd just like to point out a few things: The OSC letter came out some months after the PT comment I linked to, true. However, the only evidence cite...

I think they need to stop using the term "partial-birth abortion" and call it by a more explicitly descriptive term: Full-term abortion. It's a procedure designed for the third trimester. My nephew was born at 26 weeks. He graduated from college a few years ago. No lingering effects from an extreme...

and again I submit the proposition: a compromise between pro and anti-abortion advocates. No abortion after brainwaves are detectable. Any of you pro-abortionists willing to go for it? I would go for that, yes. Except for the cases where it comes down to an emergency decision in order to save the l...

TMLutas: .....eh, what?...... The OSC letter is a disgrace to the OSC, frankly, and also not proof of any particular unreasonable persecution of Sternberg. Having read the letter through, they spend a great deal of time lamenting the alignment of the Smithsonian with the National Center for Science ...

I read the "we can't help you" note from OSC to Sternberg. It was not dropped for lack of merit but lack of jurisdiction for the very reasons that you cite. I think you can find a fair minded review here . The actual letter is available here both in html and pdf form and it is just factually false ...
