With a strong enough propellant, and massive enough engines, you don't need to worry that much about speeds, because then you can hollow out freakin big asteroids and use them as spacecraft or cities.

ALL metal pitchforks are rusty. It's because of the acids still in the grass when it's freshly cut. Pitchforks only used to handle dry grasses lasts a lot longer. One flaw in your assumptions... you assume that villages are 2 - 3 miles apart, and that might well be in relatively open terrain.
