(I don't have a Modern Tales account so I base this off the current page and what you've shown us here.) It looks like you use photographs as references for your characters. The thing that bugs me most about this is characters who talk without opening their mouths. You have three panels on the late...

To be a considered and called a peer by someone with your scope of artistic talent is both a compliment so overwhelming, and a revelation of such humble character that one cannot help admiring you. You have no idea how utterly pwned I feel right now. Gee, thanks Mr. B! Seriously, the only wa...

That's a very spiffy inking job. Must have taken a while to ink, no? Thanks, Kirb...actually, thanks to everyone for the kind words on this piece. It took about 12 hours to ink it. Usually it takes me between 6 and 8 hours to ink a page (10 at the outside most), so this one was pretty labor-intensi...

Inking like a painter
So I'm in the process of re-thinking the way that I ink. Actually, it's probably more of an evolution, but I'm enjoying putting more tonality into my work. Creating soft edges. Letting shadowy areas melt into vagueness. In short, I'm trying to bring a more painterly approach to my inking. Here are t...

This is a really nice start! One thing to remember, though, is that a brush offers you the ability to create lush thick-to-thin lines. Don't be afraid to experiment with that. I like how you've begun to establish a light source by giving the left side of the tree and figure a heavier outline. It mig...

1) Establish the location and relative distance of the characters first. Don't just cut back and forth from grimacing headshots and then dive into close-ups of fists to bodies. It's very important to build the scene to crescendo. 2) Vary your point of view. Too many webcomics portray everything with...

Well I guess it would be interesting to find out if my inking is messing up my pencilling, or my pencilling is messing up my inking. you make the call! Looks to me like it's a little of both. The good points: 1) On the large meta-panel with the gun coming out of the guy's leg, it's nice to see your...

I'm really impressed by how sharp the lines are. What tools are you using for this? Thanks, Ping. I'm not one of those guys that has a whole list of tools they use for different things. I just stick to a Winsor-Newton Series 7 brush, size 1. Except for stuff that needs to be ruled (panel borders, e...

This looks like fun! I really liked the pencils that Ping did on the female character and wanted to maintain the stylized elegance that she created. The inks aren't quite as slick as I'd hoped, but here's the result: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/~stevebryant/sketches/ping_inks.jpg I inked it as a ...

Re: Brush Inking and Ink Washes
Incidentally, I realise not a lot of people use ink washes in their comic-work. In fact he only person I know who does this is Diana McQueen of Girlamatic's Spades. Anyone know of any others? Marvel is currently reprinting Dick Giordano's wash art adaptation of Dracula, which he began in the...

It's that part. It's kind of hillarious, hals of those inking examples look exactly the same. I mean, they're all good, but there's only a few of them that are distinctive from the rest. I don't have an eye of a professional inker, but far from it being unexperienced eye. :-? I think the fault was ...

He does have thick skin. Each page he does, he posts on his DeviantArt site and several (like 5 or 6) artist communities asking for feedback. Some of them tell him to scrap a panel or what is wrong, while others praise him. Having assessments by one's peers is a priceless experience, for sure. It's...

I was using Wild & Crazy from ComiCraft, but recently switched to Golden Oldie from BlamBot.Golden Oldie just has a nice open quality to the letters and reads well at smaller sizes (though it is a bit more horizontally extended than W&C). Either font will cost you around $20 but are well worth it. -...

Every time you post something Steve, you make me sick! :) Geez, tone down the awesomeness. You'll kill someone someday. I'm sorry...I hope I wasn't being a jerk. It just helps to have a visual touchstone to demonstrate my point. Well, don't compare it to Steve Bryant. But as he said, it's not...

Overall, I really like this one. The figure drawing has a nice natural quality to it and the action scenes are handled in a confident matter. The third panel doesn't to bother me, either. Umm isn't that was previous pages are meant for? Doesn't seem right to say that  Faub mentioned some stuff ...

A beautiful piece, Faub. My first response to the question of inking it is: don't. The piece is complete in and of itself as a tonal pencil drawing. However, if you're looking to do it as an ink piece, my first thought would be to redraw it. In the thread that you linked to at the beginning of your ...

Magic is all about smoke and mirrors. Those are the bits that make it exciting. So you happen to know a couple tricks that give your work a professional look. That doesn't make you a hack. In fact, a lot of artists would love to be where you are. You've been doing this for how many years? That expe...

When I look at my older stuff, some of it still holds up and some just makes me wince...the stuff that makes me wince, though, is the material that reminds me that I'm starting to put it all together. I just have to withstand the urge to go back in my archives and fix everything. My colorist would k...

The main things that I use to create motion in an action sequence are body language and folds in clothing. a jacket (or loose garment) will compress and react to how the body is moving...I use that to try to help me convey movement. Flowing hair is good, too: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/~stevebry...
