I believe they eventually discovered in the books that the question was "What is 5 times 9?" Well, at one point as Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent travelled into the past of earth, they found some cavemen and one layed the message "what is 7 times 6?" out of scrabble letters. He though mixed it all up...
