Re: The Mayor: Control Freak or Secret Villain?
Ever since the Mayor of Pharos City has made her presence known (along with her dislike of Lightbringer) it makes me wonder about her motives. Is she secretly part of why Pharos was so corrupt and filled with crime for some twisted reason be it bribes or something even more sinister? or is this all...

"stress" [19/5/2010]
Putting aside how Lightbringer's getting cagey and evasive (which isn't a first - remember how he wouldn't even address the issue of the mayor back when Crane first tried to raise it?)... Putting aside how this is addressing some important concerns... ...I just want to say that visually, today's upd...

Re: Yes.
There's nothing keeping them from arresting LB for what he did to the Slavers, including dangling that one guy. But they're not trying to arrest him for that. They're not justifying it like that. They're saying, if you have special powers, we won't tolerate you using them to help others, no matter ...

Re: Yes.
Not only that... but I would argue... can we really care about what she says? Should Lightbringer care about what she says? I mean... Haven't seen all that much interaction between the two of them... They don't really seem all that close... Michelle rather lacks in personality... so, it's really di...

Re: Yes.
Oh, don't get me wrong; that's a perfectly valid (some would say superior) storytelling approach. It's just that when I read Lightbringer, I'm usually expecting a soapbox. :P He fooled us; this time it's the blonde lady with glasses who was on the soapbox. *Grin* ---Al That kinda bothers me, actual...

Re: Yes.
Now, to be clear: I don't mind when Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man go out and fight crime in the same manner as Lightbringer. Sure, in the real world such vigilatism would raise a million legal and ethical questions, and would be a pretty bad idea all around...But within those comics, "superheroes...

Re: Yes.
I think making a thug who was enslaving people think he MIGHT be dropped, in order to give up his boss' name, is acceptable. The only physical discomfort he endured was the blood rushing to his head. To my mind that makes it a little more acceptable than say, waterboarding, where you think you're d...

Re: Yes.
I dunno...I like the blonde girl's point. Why should LB be penalized for what he MIGHT do? You mean, like illegally torturing a perp to make him confess? Acting as a proxy through which the police can dodge the law ? Acting as a vigilante without accepting the rules and restrictions that bind the p...

Re: Yes.
And so, our great and noble hero decides that his powers give him the privilege - nay, the duty - to break the law and ignore the elected government. Oh frabjous day.
Nice going, Carter.

Re: Yes.
That is a large part of the character's appeal... ...but I don't think I agree with Sandy's reasoning here. Unless I misunderstood something here, Lightbringer isn't being arrested for his powers, or for something he might do. He's being arrested for something he's doing - using his powers to fight ...

Re: YES!! I was hoping this kind of scenario would happen!!
I like that... Even though, people are starting to call Lightbringer a vigilante... (Even though, in the "Ends Justify the Means" topic, I believe we've established that Lightbringer might have broken... what? One or two laws? 1)It's still debatable how many the criminals he arrests can actually be...

It's...interesting.
I'm unsure of where this is headed. I just hope Carter can find a way to keep doing the right thing without, well...Ah, I've explained my positions at length in the other thread.

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
Interesting quote. Hmm... Is this "A Man for All Seasons" a play? A movie? A book? Let me know... Play that was adapted into a few movies (according to Wikipedia, anyway). Hmm. Though, I think... How about superheroes that, while they don't work for law enforcement... don't go around breaking the l...

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
I believe the famous quote from "A Man for all Seasons" is appropriate: William Roper : So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law! Sir Thomas More : Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? William Roper : Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!...

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
China wouldn't appreciate an unofficial American agent, for sure... and there would be some diplomatic discussion involved on the issue (Probably something along the lines of a global response to handling the superhero vigilante problem)... But really, what could China say or do about the matter? B...

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
Have you seen The Dark Knight movie? I realize it is a work of fiction, but there is one instance in the movie that looks like a pretty clear-cut example. Remember the Chinese businessman dude (I think his name was Lao)? He was working with the mob in Gotham City. He had assured the mob that he wou...

Re: Do you have what it takes to be a superhero?
Well, I gotta say it depends a lot on what powers I get and what kind of world I live in. Like I've been saying in the "The Ends don't Justify the Means" thread, being a superhero isn't necessarily the right thing to do. But if I'm capable of it? Hm...Probably not. I'm the most honest people I know,...

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
I do believe you are right about society needing laws in order to function. However, there's no denying that law enforcement is limited to the actions that they can take because of said laws. Then, there's also the fact that... pretty much every public institution has policies that limit their acti...

Re: "The Ends don't Justify the Means." [12/9/2009]
Some further thoughts: I could be wrong, but I've generally gotten the impression that "superheroes are a good thing" is one of the core assumptions of this comic. That in itself is not surprising. Unless they're intended as deconstructions, most superhero comics assume that. After all...most of the...
