Meme jam thread
I bought a 12x18" Wacom off of eBay to attempt a DIY Cintiq build. ( http://bongofish.co.uk/wacom/wacom_pt1.html ) It's an older model Intuos and much larger than my 6x8. So, to get better accustomed to it's sensitivity and size, I figured a jam thread was in order. Simple rules of this thread : I'l...

Well, there's alway cheating as I've been told. If it's your own work, copying it isn't cheating. Over-using the same art, however, is a creative sin and should be avoided. Scott Kurtz of PVP has publicly stated he draws over templates to maintain character sizes. Kistofer Straub of Starslip Crisis...

I'm not crazy about mechanical pencils but I got a nice combo from Techtools at Hobby Lobby awhile back. (It's a .5 pencil, black pen, red pen, and stylus. Haven't been able to find it online, though.) I personally do most of my sketching with Col-erase color pencils ( http://www.dickblick.com/zz205...

Consistency is maintained by understructure. If you build your drawings as solid dimensional shapes that can turn, you'll be able to draw the characters from differing angles. My best advice is to work on model sheets. (See examples from Disney films here - http://www.animationarchive.net/Model%20Sh...

Okay, we'll take the last bit of speech in the sample you gave. It's... "'Fore they get brave again." The words are in one speech bubble, but in two ovals which run into each other. Normally, in comics, when two ovals run into each other, each contains a separate sentence or paragraph, such as in t...

Of the options posted, I'd prefer the size of option #3 (medium 2x2 format) with the 'rounder' speech bubbles of option #1. The 'raggedy' speech bubbles seem a little harder to read for me, but for single sample strips it's a bit harder to tell if everyone will speak that way or just some specific ...

Which format reads clearest and why?
I'm redesigning my sites and gearing up for a relaunch. I'm overcoming technical problems but I need help. I want to know how I can format the comics themselves to make them read better and encourage folks to stick around. Acting on some suggestions, I've posted some examples on this blog - http://w...

Depends on your style, I guess. I think Reggie from PVP looks black and he's just as shaded as the rest of the cast - http://www.pvponline.com/article/2878/thu-sep-14

I recommend getting a lightbox. Seriously, I don't animate on paper without one. Plus they're handy for comic-making. You can get one at the local art supply store and tape a plastic pegbar to it. Since 2 of my characters have angel wings, I just thought I'd comment. Basically referance pics of birds is the way to go, though I also recommend looking at pictures of people swimming if you're going to draw them on somebody flying. Here's how I've used them, more or less. For a rogue fallen angel...

Since you're writing it, I really recommend having a solid grasp on what the characters are saying before you let her draw it. Any reworkings shouldn't be anything major at that last stage. Expression is very important to an artist and changing what's being said without changing how it's expressed w...

Filesize suggestions - crop it a little tighter and use smaller spaces between panels. Actual physical size does make a differance, plus you're not really using the blank space anyway. You might want to consider limiting your color pallet. I also recommend trying something like the xat.com Image Opt...

Referance is invaluable. Do a google image search for pictures that spark ideas. Sometimes you'll find something that looks exactly like what you need, other times you just use elements to create what you see in your head. Often our biggest problem as artists is our lack of desire to render somethin...

They're fairly flat and could use some dimension. The first image mostly outlines the shapes and the floor creeps up on the page rather than drawing back in space. The second one has some overlapping on the girl's leg, but it's still pretty flat. Perspective takes a decent amount of practice to get ...

It really depends on the look you're going for. Coloring pencils is more difficult than inks because pencil doesn't scan as cleanly and usually requires touching up. Some people use them, albeit with adjustments. ( http://www.megatokyo.com ) Then there are folks who use a brush, ( http://www.wapsisq...
