This could very likely end up being obsolete, if discussion topics take up their own threads, but I thought it might be good to start things off.

A general thread for your comments on my comic site. Constructive criticism is always welcome, flames are tolerated if they have something substantial to say ('you suck' is meaningless and silly fluff, and will be ignored or deleted. 'you suck because... [blah blah]', inserting in place of blah blah...

NEWS: New Update Schedule
Summary: Beginning on August 1st I will be updating 3 times a week-- Monday-Wednesday-Friday, rather than 1 chapter/month. Up to now, HLB has updated on a monthly basis, one chapter on the first of each month. I liked it this way because i was free to fine-tune an entire chapter before showing, and ...

How do YOU do flashbacks?
A lot of the time, flashbacks aren't hard to maneuver at all. If somebody is sitting at a campfire narrating and the panels suddenly begin to illustrate the story being told rather than the person telling it, people get the idea pretty easily. Often, this flashback moves gradually from voiceover to ...

i *was* wondering, tho, whether that comic in your sig was yours... (i checked it out because your post sounded so arrogant, i wanted to see if you lived up to it. if it was joking, sorry. a winking smiley, a j/k, or a link to whatever comic you do would have made the tone clearer.) i couldn't figur...

proportion... the only thing i know of is measure it out before you do the detail, according to the size of the head. I didn't notice anything horribly glaring reading it, though the sihouette pics seemed less proportionate than the fully drawn ones... hee Hee! cool comic, btw. the art is simple and...

Strips by collage? interesting... i've always found it easiest to do the strip on a single page, and just use photoshop to color and make sure the lines are straight. Other people i've seen don't combie theyre panels into a single file at all but rather place each panel as a separate image on the pa...

close-ups, variation in angles, drawing people larger would all make the the look of it more interesting. backgrounds might help too. The lines *are* very thick... either using a thinner pen or drawing larger would solve that. Ballpoint is pretty much held to be a bad idea for inking, though people ...

The Artist'c Complete Guide to Facial Expressions (Gary Faigin) isn't a how-to-draw book, but i found it really useful anyway: it explains both scientifically the workings behind facial expressions and pictorally how they look, what distinct features each has and what effects the degree of expressi...

Ooh! yeah-- the pic at the bottom left looks great, the face in particular. i feel like i'm being really nitpicky now... but some of that contrast on the body would be nice too. black flames... i was thinking of that... i guess you would do that by making the flame itself black, with light around it...

I don't see any planning lines... i more meant the shading itself. the outlines look inked or at least exTREMEly darkly penciled, but the shading looks like a #2 or so-- it would be too light at the best of times, and with black outlines it just looks like... an afterthought. I don't know if pen out...

drawings look pretty good. nice faces. My biggest criticism is that youve got, at least on the page i'm looking at (today's), some really wimpy pencil lines-- Most outlines are nice and dark, but everything else is done super-light and very messy. shade more smoothly or do it some other way, and out...

characters is the biggie for me. if it doesn't have charming and engaging characters, i probably won't go back. Art, for me, has to be pretty much faultless, tho not necessarily spectacular art that i would ooh and ah at if it were just art. perfect, anatomy, perfect compositions, perfect expression...

postscript: just read the undine comic... in your case, if at all feasible, i'd continue with color.... you cgi beautifully, your colors are great, and your patience for backgrounds is amazing (most of us, i think, are exceptionally lazy about backgrounds.) your figures need some practice (first fra...

Either way works if you do it right. In color it is definitely easier for the reader to keep the characters straight-- face it, unless and until you really hook a reader, they _will_ think of your characters as 'short guy', 'elf guy', 'brown-haired girl', or what have you. particularly if your art s...
